Where is that crow?

by Gray Thicket

I know how to make some words, but I do not usually write. It is not something I am used to. But my friend Arsahm says that it helps to “release his soul.” He is a strange person. I do not know what that means, exactly, but I feel like I need it. My heart is in a cage, and I am filled with anger. I should try to learn from him.

I write this in the Moldy Pub. I like it here. I like Kosh and Geyef – the sisters. Kosh especially, because she is strong and does not smile, but her heart is filled with goodness. I see how she takes care of the children here – street children of every kind who do not have a home. This is a good thing.

Far Falls is strange to me. All of these people are still strange. I like the Pub, and the children who laugh and sing songs, and like to climb atop me like Nef does. I like the crowfolk too. Their place is confusing and unsteady, but they live simply. I feel like they do not care for politics or pride – like the other peoples of Far Falls who seem to hate one another.
Earlier, we learned a great deal about this Captain Iskander, a holy warrior and temple guard. He is respected by all, and very strong. But he is gone, and the clergy have not been good at learning why or how. We know very little too. We talked to many clerics and looked at a messy room, but I was not listening to everything. I am not sure I should be here. I should be in the mountains.

We were just leaving when a young woman approached us. She was a cleric, and called the Dwarf over for talking to. Skathor said she wanted to meet us, but needed to be secret. She named a tavern here in town, but would only come late when everyone was sleeping and no one can see her. She is a cleric, but she looks young to me. Someone said she was pretty, but I can’t really tell.

As usual, my companions were all arguing about what to do next. Skathor was in his robes and wanted to go back to the Pub. Someone wanted to talk to the guard at High Gate. Clay. The last one to see Captain Iskander. It was close, so we started walking. But then the city bells started ringing and ringing – and everyone started to run. I heard these bells before, in a town in Brury. Many towns use them to warn of danger. We ran to High Gate, and they were closing the city. We began to argue again.

In the end, Skathor and Arsahm decided to stay in the city walls. They want to meet the young woman and talk to her. They want to talk to other clerics too. Theren was very certain that we should not stay in the city. He thinks it is dangerous, and we should go back to the pub. I went because I still wanted to find the crow – the one who found this coin. And the crow town is outside the walls. So I went. I do not know why Nef came. He was very quiet. Strange.

We walked around the city – to go back to the Songs. There were no armies to see. No siege of the city. Some people were stuck outside, and so they all hid in their homes – so it was very quiet. Nothing to the south, the west, or the north. Skathor asked us to bring him his armor and meet him later, so we did. We brought his chain and passed it through the gate – because Skathor still had his fancy temple clothes on. And then we went to the Pub.

Theren was unsettled and … what is the word … irritated. He said Skathor and Arsahm were fools for staying in Far Falls’ walls. He said we should sell their property and share the money. But it was not real. He was just irritated. I was surprised that Nef did not agree. Nef was quiet and distracted – I asked if something was wrong, but he left. Quietly. This is not like my little goblin friend, who usually jibes, and laughs, and lies. He usually says these things, but he does not mean it. I know he has good heart.

Theren said he wanted to drink, but he does not drink. He did not notice even that Nef left. But later, after dinner, the crow-child came. Skathor the dwarf gave him a silver, and said another would come if he saw the drunk crow. He came for his next silver. He said he saw the crow. The one who saw my coin. The one called Zerko Jaal. Theren started to barter with the child, back and forth. Coin no coin, tell us first, show us, then coin, no, yes, half now, copper, silver. I became upset and threw the coin to the child. The little crow said Zerko Jaal was at the Perch – we left immediately.

Crow town is hard to move around, but we found the Perch again. Theren asked for Zerko – who screeched like a crow and then jumped off the edge – gliding to the next building. Theren used his death magic, and appeared on the other roof – grabbed the crow and began to threaten him. I though about trying to jump, but there was no way. So I ran back down … and sadly became lost. Crow town is confusing. I also fell through a staircase that was too weak for me. Eventually, Theren came down with Zerko – who led us to the place where he found it.

Zerko had tried to run away because he thought we worked for an elf. He thought we were thugs – looking for money he owes. Theren kept trying to scare the crow, but Zerko did not look scared. And he did not care about the coin. It was given to him.
We found out a strange woman in black paid him to play a joke. He was gambling late at night, and walked away, and she approached him. Offered him money to play a joke. Late one night, he took butcher’s offal and spread it over a rooftop on a farm. The farm belonged to a prominent goblin farmer. He did not know the woman, or the goblin, or care about anything but making some silver. He showed us the place where he met the woman but there was nothing there. It was just an alley.
And so now we are back in the Pub again, and I want to sleep. The gates to Far Falls are still closed, but nothing is happening. And I do not know where Nef is. I hope he is ok.
