characters templates gender sexuality side-panel content-organisation
Disclaimer: Upfront I wanna say that this is in no way a complaint about the inclusion of these input boxes or how the World-Anvil team has been handling this topic - I've been on WA for a while now and it makes me happy that in recent time, the options for authors/players etc to expand upon their characters' identity have grown. A lot (if not all) of my stories include themes of self-discovery and struggle against society's narrow definition of what both gender and sexuality are. As a queer person myself, I find these topics important to include in fiction and obviously people should have the opportunity to explore said themes in TTRPG and such as well. So I request you understand that I in no way wish to erase or promote any erasure of the given features or the topics they expand upon. Thanks.

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

I've noticed that some prompt boxes, particularly in the 'Character' template have been moved around a lot - notably regarding gender, identity, sexuality and pronouns. I understand that it's a complicated topic and that depending on the character and/or universe or story theme, worldbuilders might want more space to expand upon these topics. But with other characters (like side characters) or with stories where it's a less important facet of characters (or the author has less to say about it), its inclusion in the main part of the article can break up the reading flow (e.g. a character of mine that lives in a world where there is a lot more acceptance with topics such as gender and sexuality, the only thing I would put in these input boxes are "She identifies as a woman and goes by she/her pronouns" or "She is into women". Having this in the main part of the article instead of in the info panel on the right breaks up the reading flow IMO and the constant moving around of where these 'prompt answers', or whatever you wanna call them, go has resulted in me having to constantly come back and edit or find new ways to display it in the article).
Another example is the nickname/alias prompt that is usually displayed alongside the character's name at the top of the page. However, I'd find it much more useful if I could let it sit in the side panel, e.g. under the character portrait (I know you can achieve this by creating your own 'prompt' in the 'Sections' tab, but it's irritating and I also don't want all of the things I would move to the side panel to be either at the top or at the bottom of the panel).

How does this feature request address the current situation?

My idea for this is to enable the authors of articles to choose where they want these prompts to be displayed on an individual level. Not sure how much work that is to implement, I'm only a beginner in web design stuff, but it would make it much easier to control how an article reads, and allow for short, bulletpoint-esque answers to be moved to the character side panel at the author's discretion.

ya ... "why" changes were made aside ... it would be great to be able to customise any of these sorts of things ... maybe a list of prompts and the ability to choose between main body and side bar ... then either as an addition or if that is too difficult, the ability to change the order of prompts in any article

I certainly agree that the devs ought to not alter the positioning of where prompts are displayed - it messes about with worlds where creators have designed things to fit the pre-existing style. As mentioned below, the recent repositioning of the sexuality prompt from the sidebar to the main body of text was a bit awkward - I had to go through all the characters I'd created and alter the useful 1-word descriptions because they'd all been moved over into the main body of the text. Allowing creators to choose where prompts are displayed may be tricky but I think would be helpful.

Maybe a radio button would work. (Main or Sidebar).

It's things like this that make me think it is simply safer to rely purely on your own usage of BBCode to dictate what goes where.

I'm not sure how complicated this is, and admittedly I haven't explored any custom article templates yet, but I would love the ability to decide which things go in the sidebar without creating adding them manually to the sections tab, if only because then I have to make that CSS match the generator ones which can be frustrating. Perhaps this could be achieved through adding custom "sections" where you fill in info for both the prompt/answer specifically to add to the sidebar?

This has been a hotly debated topic for some time, and everyone keeps arguing about this, which is why it keeps moving around. Let's face it, NO ONE is going to be happy about it, so stop badgering the devs about it. They're doing what they can.

I agree. It was really quite annoying and disruptive when the "sexuality" prompt changed from in the sidebar to in the main body of the text - particularly since they didn't keep a sidebar option.

YES. THE READING FLOW. I move character information around quite a bit sometimes because of this.

I agree! I want to be able to choose what sections (main article or side panel) prompts or info appear in, but ideally want to drag and drop each prompt into the exact order I want them in. To me it would make a lot of sense if this was a feature of Custom Templates, and is how I originally expected them to work.
