I'd be interested in some alternative ways in a timeline to make era boundaries and era content look more distinctive. One idea I quite like for this is if an era could be assigned a background colour and then events within it inherit that background colour. You'd be able to see at a glance which era you were looking at, at any point in the timeline. Events in nested eras would inherit from the lowest level. Overlapping eras need a bit of thought and might require the ability to set a custom colour at event level. Of course there are many other options, that's just one thought, but I agree with the main idea of making that distinction more visually appealing if there is a nice way to do it.
