Ai ChatGPT worldbuilding

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

It takes a lot of time to fully flesh out a city in your homebrewed world. It would be nice to have a tool that can auto generate or generate based on guidelines you have set out or even based on othe surrrounding cities on your map. This is where AI and ChatGPT can come in.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Using the API of ChatGPT, you can have a form that looks at certain user inputted criteries i.e. local, size, population, reason to visit, key locations, etc or leave it all blank and the AI will generate an amount of information to fully realize this city in minutes. If you drop a pin on the map it can also use the information of the surrounding cities already created and use that as a basis point to maybe create allies or conflicts bewteen them.

What are other uses for this feature request?

Having ChatGPT intergrated also allows it to help with Character/NPC backstories, Magic Item creation, combat encounters specifically curated to your party which also has an option for homebrewing or modifying existing monsters for your campaign that makes them feel unique and refreshing to players that have fought them before in this campaign or another creating a one of a kind experience for them all while saving the GM hours of work.

The Team's Response

Thank you for the suggestion, we really appreciate it! We understand where you're coming from, but unfortunately this would take too many resources to make it worth it—especially with the low community support it has. I recommend taking a look at random generators for worldbuilding, such as Nerdbuilding, Eigengrau's Generator, and our own Random Generators section.

AI like that is fundamentally uncreative; it's just a mishmash of stolen content. What you call "unique and refreshing" material would all be ripped from the hands of writers who actually took the time and effort to create something imaginative. It's up to you whether you want to support the massive theft of writing/art/whatever in the name of saving a bit of time, but don't bring it into World Anvil.

You may want to look into the Nerdbuilding Generator, from WorldAnvil user TheBeardedHeathen.   As a bonus, it's already integrated with WorldAnvil. Their blog post for the Settlement on the Edge flash challenge has instructions.   It's an actual programmed random generator, rather than a ChatGPT text predictor "AI", and you can input your own desired details such as geography or let it fully generate everything for you. It doesn't give you sentences, but it generates enough stats to make great inspiration.

This is depressing. Add a Lorem Ipsum generator instead, so that the artificial content will have some soul.

I'm all for using generators for prompts and inspiration, not so much for anything more than that.

As other people have said, AI doesn't belong in the creative process - if you want to use it for yourself, that's fine, but I don't want my creative ideas fed to an AI without my knowledge, and I don't want it in my worldbuilding process.

    Say no to "AI".

I say this as someone who works for one of the major companies pushing AI right now.   Don't.

I've said this before and I've said this again: predatory AI companies have no place in the creative process. Come back when the way these AIs are trained is actually ethical and doesn't leech off of stolen data.

Honestly, I can see certain benefits of this, however, to me I think it is way too big to waste the WA admin's time with.   plus this has been suggested and declined. Please look through past suggestions before you waste your coins.

AI writing/art does not need to be integrated into World Anvil. If it must be used, please use it elsewhere and add it yourself.

This is something that can be largely accomplished by opening another tab and logging into openai.

Something like this has been recommended and shot down at least twice before that I can recall.
