I'm glad people have fun for worldember, but I primarily use WA for fanfic related stuff, and I'm constantly worried I'll forget to turn it off and get stuff that is only partially my own work submitted to a public competition, which I really don't want to happen!
I assume that every time the leaderboard updates it sniffs around WA to find all recently updated articles. And that's how articles get added backed in? But yeah this needs to be fixed. If people click to op out, they should only have to do that once.
I love WorldEmber and have never really thought about how it would be for a user who is not trying to participate; I can imagine this is frustrating and a opt out switch for at least article creation would be awesome!
While I personally don't mind WE, I do agree that it's basically impossible to escape it if you're not at all interested in it or if you find it too intrusive. There's no denying that it is a huge event that pretty much takes over WA during December (and even leading up to it), so I can easily empathize with people who feel overwhelmed or distracted or simply annoyed. I also believe that not giving people a way to avoid the content they don't want to engage with will only make them more exasperated and frustrated with said content, even if they wouldn't have felt strongly about it otherwise. So, letting people curate their experience isn't hurting anyone but instead help keep the peace.
I love WorldEmber and I'm happy it's so easy to participate in. However, there should also be an easy way to opt out. The current options are all fairly extreme: Turn community features off entirely; Make your world Private; Only write in/edit articles created before the event; Avoid WA entirely until it's over.
Yes please, I would love the opportunity to opt out of competitions. I wouldn't mind it so much but the "Entry for WorldEmber 2024" thing appears at the bottom of each new article despite being something I don't want on any of my articles. Like DMFW mentioned, even clicking "Remove Entry" isn't a permanent solution; the article keeps being readded to World Ember whenever its updated.
Although I am a fan of WorldEmber I understand wanting to fully opt out. Kind of tangentially related (and it may be a bug) I have a meta article about WorldEmber I don't want to include (because it doesn't qualify). I can do that and WA warns me that the action is undoable. Except it isn't. Every time I update the meta article it gets re-included in World Ember and requires another specific exclusion. Since I'm maintaining it when I add new World Ember articles that is a lot... Small point and I can live with it but it is on the theme of exclusion (at article level).
The wording is somewhat confusing here, I'm not entirely sure what the suggestion is (aside from "create a WorldEmber opt-out", which I am for).
