Timeline Timescale - Adjust the scale of scrolling up and down the timeline

Feature Upgrade · Timelines · Created by Anturis

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

When scrolling through a Timeline set as Timescale, the years are increased/decreased one at a time. This means for really big Timelines that span centuries or mellenia, a user can easilly be scrolling for a while before any new content is seen.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

A setting to change this so it could be scrolled by decades, centuries, millenia etc. would make the Timeline more easy to navigate if there are vast swathes of time. The Author of the Timeline would be able to set the scale in which it is scrolled through, both by using the scrollwheel, the arrows or the side-bar for viewing different eras. This would allow the Timelines to be broader and not have to be dedicated to year by year, meaning larger scales of time and more generic events to be mpped to it.

What are other uses for this feature request?

Anything that requires a timeline over a vast amount of time. Using the different Columns with Historical Events, a usr could make a Civilization tree that is easy to see and spans over centuries and mellenia without anyone viewing it having to scroll continuously and lose track of what is where in the Timeline.

The Team's Response

Thanks for your suggestion! A planned update to timelines will add an option to set "ellipsis" in the timeline to skip long stretches of time, which will address the issue where timescale mode has too much empty space.   Regarding the suggestion itself, we feel that there are enough ways to quickly navigate around the timeline. The jump arrows will already take you to the next event (now matted how far away it is) and you can use the minimap to move even quicker than that.

I need the opposite, where I need this in smaller increments (days, weeks, or at least months).

I would love this... But I'd also love the opposite to be true and allow us change it to smaller increments of months, weeks and days as well.

I is there a way to "compress" uneventful times on a stimescale, like i still want generally for the most part yearly but for certain parts of the time line there isdecades or hundres years that are blank. I dont like the way this looks, so having it be applicable to each section of a time line would be cool

This has been my #1 request since the new timelines were released. Timescale timelines are amazing at showing how events overlap and relate to each other, but those relationships get lost on larger timescales when we're locked to 1 year. And if your timeline doesn't benefit from a map/image, then a chronicle is mostly wasted space.

I would love to have a visual representation of the time between events on the timeline. Perhaps it could be based on user inputed scale, or just a default size with the distances proportional to one another.

If you click the arrow button on the right, it will go to the next event, either forward (down arrow) or back (up arrow).
