Comment Private Freeman

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

When one is leaving a comment on a user's page or an article, there is a little box offering to make it private. This box is followed by an informative bit explaining what private means.
However, what this box fail to mention (and would be interessant to know for anybody leaving a comment) is that freeman won't be able to read it, regardless of the world belonging to them or not.
This happened to me while helping someone I know begin their worldbuilding journey by giving them feedback, as I am more experienced both on worldbuilding and worldanvil. They had the notification but couldn't access the comment.
I had to find a more out-of-Worldanvil way to give them their feedback so it would remain private as they like, but we've both lost some time as we would have discussed the matter earlier on and we wouldn't have stressed over the fact they couldn't access my review.
I had this chance because I personnaly know the other party. For other user, I think they would have never known the comment was unreadable and so they would have never been able to give the information contained in it. I know, technically, that everything paying allows you to have and do is listed on "pricing", but I hardly think any user know the entire list. I would have liked to know earlier.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

I suggest that the informative button informs of the lacking information aswell, so that one won't leave comment on user's who just can't read it (for that is rather useless). Maybe disabling this option on freeman's world and page is another solution. I don't know how the disabling would be doable. I think changing the text, however, must be way simpler.

What are other uses for this feature request?

Displaying publicly that this is a "premium" feature, as it is for other feature in World Anvil, might encourage people to take a subscribtion, just so they can access it.

Follow up

Update : I learned (from the same freeman) the suggestion feature (so... this one) is also unusable and... the error message seemed cryptic to them and I also had to look it up (in the comment section of the coin) to find the problem... maybe indicate this is impossible ? Because the interface lets them do all the step and then, just do not take their participation into account and put the cryptic "naughty dinosaure" error message. So I think generally make freeman aware of what is NOT available to them might be a better explaination.

The Team's Response

Thanks for pointing this out! It's a great point, so we'll add a note saying that freemen can't see or reply to private comments.   Regarding your follow-up, we got similar feedback from a different user and it's already fixed. This was an oversight rather than intended behavior, so we've now made the error messages more transparent.

I could see a slight feature adjustment where you can read private comments even as freeman, but you can only leave private comments if you have a paid tier.

Great suggestion imo. I think it'd be just nice and fair to be very clear and transparent about it.

I suppose this has merit and is worth looking into at the very least.

This happened to me with another user earlier this year or last year, I think. I was surprised to find they were unable to read it. I do think it would be better to just disable certain things on their end, or either make the button say "this is a paid feature!" or something like you suggested, though I don't know how complicated it would be to implement. Still, these are very valid points and features are a thing that I always consider worth revisiting. Thanks for suggesting this! God bless. <3
