Edit article type (character, plot, etc) after creating

tags functionality linking session-notes

When creating an article, I often discover later I would rather it be a different type. For example I created a bunch of characters as just articles and later realized I needed them to have to functionality that the character type has (the ability to create relationships between characters). I also just created some articles that I later realized would be very helpful to have the functionality of "plot" but am unable to change them once they are created.

The ability to change/add the functionality of certain tags after an article, character, location, etc is created would save a ton of time. And if they could have more than one tag (ie character and plot) that could also help a lot with navigating and connecting for session notes.

The Team's Response

Thanks for your suggestion! This will not be implemented, as each template has specific text fields (and even unique features, like relationships) that aren't mutually compatible. Therefore, it can't be implemented for technical reasons.   I would also like to point out that this has been suggested and declined before. Please search for previous suggestions, as anything that is declined for technical reasons will not be implemented if it's suggested again. Thank you!

This would be invaluable, in saving me time when I realize this far too late. Heck, it'd save time even when creating articles as I often fear getting it wrong.

This feature has been request multiple times in the past, so clearly, it's a common problem needing some sort of solution. However, if I recall past discussion about it, for technical reasons, it would be quite difficult to implement fully. Again, if I recall (and I very well be mistaken), I think the WA team has taken it under advisement and might be looking for a means to improve the current situation.

It would help a lot as a band-aid solution.   I would like a unification of all the article type features into a single, universal article type that we can then customize as we want. The pre-made templates help to guide to some extent, but they are cumbersome if you ever want to change them around.

This would massively help my constant retconning and make placeholder articles significantly more versatile and useful.

I definitely think this would be a very helpful feature, in helping to add depth to all aspects of worlds and the peoples that the writers/creators imagine

Hasn't happened to me a lot but I have had to duplicate articles in the past when I realized another type suited it better. Just put up a prompt to make sure the author knows what will be missing after the transfer, and maybe give them the chance to stick it into another section or just copy it into their own doc to replace later.

I have this happen to me too often and have to fix it after. I'd be really happy if that were a thing. Just make a prompt to make people confirm that things in any fields outside the general article field will be lost and call it a day

Have had this happen to me. I realize that the different type would likely result in 'losing' data that may not match the new type being merged to, but a simple warning/user-confirmation-prompt would probably avert most accidental damage.

Likely hard to implement, but I would be in favour. Would probably lose the content added in other sections already, except perhaps if they were simply shoved up into the General Content section

I think this has been suggested multiple times already, and the team has declined it because all the Type-specific prompts and configurations would be too difficult to change afterwards.
