family-tree sorting date-of-birth date-of-death
I suggest we have the option to automatically sort character articles by year birth or year of death specifically within a category.

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

I have a lot of fun filling out large family trees of the nobles of my world. It's pretty easy to navigate via the family tree itself, but it is a pain in the butt to navigate from the table of contents.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Being able to automatically sort characters in a family by their year of birth or year of death would make it easier to find characters in the generational cohort you currently need for a specific story.

What are other uses for this feature request?

It can help keep track of who begat who. It can keep track of naming conventions over time, and you can follow changes between Anatol II and Anatol IV, etc.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! It's an interesting idea, although we don't think the proposed method would be the best one to implement. We have some ideas that could help with that in the future, but we'll close the suggestion for now.

Sorting only one template by a specific field that might not be filled in doesn't sound the most feasible to implement. You can mimic this sorting today by setting the article's Position to be the character's year of birth. You can also organize your categories by generation or family branch to make things easier to find.

This would take a lot of coding and work to accomplish. Why not sort them manually as you create character articles?
