Wishborne

The Genies of Zor are as malicious as they are powerful. If not for their inability to use magic without their current master wishing it, the world might be a far darker place.   It is not surprising, then, that children born of a Genie's magic are almost universally the tragic result of a wish gone wrong. Wishborne, sometimes called Genasi by arcane scholars, are created when a Genie uses its magic to impregnate a mortal woman to fulfill its master's wish for children. Unless the wish is worded very delicately, the mother is almost always an unwitting participant in the process, and more often than not perishes from the strain of bearing such powerful magic for the duration of the pregnancy. Likewise, those foolish enough to make wishes to a Genie usually perish as the result of their own desires.   Most Wishborne are unaware of their origins. They are exceptionally rare to begin with, and more often than not orphaned by the processes that birth them. Very few people who meet a Wishborne would perceive them as anything other than a slightly unusual looking member of their mother's race, and those with the requisite arcane knowledge are usually hesitant to explain to a Genasi what it means to be Wishborne. As a result, most Wishborne grow up only vaguely aware of being different than others around them, surprised to find themselves invoking subtle magical abilities inherited from their Genie progenitor.   Wishborne from Aeuz are more likely than their counterparts elsewhere to know something of their origins, as arcane knowledge is far more bountiful there than anywhere else in the world. Most Aeuzian Wishborne grow up experiencing something between distanced wonder and pity from others. They frequently leave Aeuz for other parts of the worlds, and can often be found working as sailors, soldiers, or in other nomadic vocations, where their natural proclivities with the elements serve them well.
