Lasamoko Scientific Colony

Lasamoko Scientific Colony is an 87-kilometer-square settlement of roughly 22,000 residents situated on the moon Lasamoko, orbiting the gas giant Octomaro in the Juno heliosphere. Initially, the colony claimed to be investigating exotic forms of ice created under unique pressure and temperature conditions with the goal of refining the ice-mining technology used to extract water, ammonia, and other substances from asteroids.

Since 984, however, it has been revealed that the colony on Lasamoko has in fact been experimenting with constructing a quantum supercomputer that uses the moon’s exotic ice instead of silicon wafers. By manipulating the molecular structure of layers of ice, Lasamoko’s scientists discovered that it was possible to create rudimentary circuits and logic gates, leading to the construction of qubits, the building block of a quantum computer.

Lasamoko’s ultimate goal is rumored to be the clandestine construction of city-sized quantum supercomputers in the icecaps of uninhabited planets, or the creation of an artificial ice asteroid that can serve as a base for cryptographic code-breaking.

A number of raids by rivals of the colony’s owner, the Ortho-Cryo Corporation, have been executed against Lasamoko. This has forced the colony’s staff to erect concentric layers of mines, automated turrets, and EMP emitters, as well as hire mercenaries specializing in anti-siege tactics. The extremely cold environment and prevalence of windborne ice crystals (which limit the effective range of targeting systems) forces most battles on Lasamoko to be brutal, close-quarters engagements.
