Aurelia Method

The Auralia Method is a category of hacking techniques that uses a combination of virtual reality and complex, hi-fi audio to identify weaknesses in digital systems. In most manifestations, it requires the hacker to enter the system and send an “echo” through it, which serves to “map” the system. The stronger the “echo,” the more detailed the map is, but the greater the chance that the system will pick up the signal and alert a security system.

Once a system has been “mapped,” the Aurelia Method presents the system as a 3D space of floating, abstract shapes that represent security systems, databases, and other digital architecture. The hacker can then create, modify, and send out additional “echoes” that represent various penetration attack vectors or further mapping programs. After a short delay, the echo returns to the hacker as a complex stream of musical notes or sounds whose pitch, rhythm, and duration represent key details about the targeted system.

From there, a hacker may run the music through their own personal database or store it for later reference. As a hacker navigates the 3D space, they usually “ping” various subsystems and listen for commonalities and anomalies in the resulting music, which a trained hacker can recognize as misconfigurations or vulnerabilities in the subsystems that may offer an opportunity for penetration or exploitation.
