Adrizrehanian
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
Adrizrehanians generally speak Draconic, with a few bits and pieces of Old Zelunii.
Culture and cultural heritage
Adrizrehanian culture is very militaristic, with mandatory military training for all able citizens, and every able citizen being considered part of a militia, expected to defend their homes if attacked.
Magic is not uncommon but is not part of everyday life for most people. Most Adrizrehanian mages focus on Enchanting rather than direct uses of Magic, and a large proportion of these mages are employed by the government.
Much of Adrizrehanian culture is derived from what little remained of the Zelunii culture after the fall of the New Abrizan Empire. Because of the scarcity of accurate historical records of the Zelunii, Adrizrehanian culture is quite different from old Zelunii culture, but it is still the closest thing to it in the modern world.
Dueling is significant in Adrizrehanian culture. There are three main types of duels: Amicus Duellem, Flagitium Duellum, and Juris Duellum. an Amicus Duellum is a friendly duel, a Flagitum Duellum is an outrage duel, typically fought after an insult or other slight, and a Juris Duellum is a judicial duel. Contrary to popular belief among those outside of the empire, duels are generally not fought to the death. For more information, refer to Duels in the Adrizrehan Empire.
Another significant aspect of Adrizrehanian culture is gladiatorial combat. This has been part of the Empire since its founding. In fact, one of the first buildings to be erected in Solissa was the Arenam (which was later replaced by the Lautus Arenam). Contrary to common belief outside of the Empire, gladiatorial combat is rarely to the death, and when it is, those involved are typically criminals who would have been executed regardless. Another misconception is that gladiatorial combat is related to dueling, which it is not. For more information, refer to Gladiatorial Combat in the Adrizrehan Empire.
Average technological level
The Adrizrehan Empire's weapons and armor are typically considered somewhat archaic, but they are widely recognized as having some of the best mages, and they are the only country with access to sky chariots.
Common Etiquette rules
Eating utensils are quite rare among Adrizrehanians. Because of this, clean, easy to eat food is preferred. Serving messy, difficult to eat food is typically seen as an insult.
Common Dress code
Most Adrizrehanians are Gryphons, who don't wear any clothing save for during formal events such as banquets or Assembly meetings. Other races typically wear simple, practical clothing.
Art & Architecture
Most Adrizrehanian architecture is done in the old Zelunii style, especially in the capital. This consists mostly of ornate stonework, with marble being quite popular.
The most popular form of art among Adrizrehanians is sculpting. The capital contains many exquisite statues of Adrizrehanian historical figures, as well as figures from the few surviving Zelunii legends.
Common Customs, traditions and rituals
Typically, people live with their family until marriage. It is quite rare, and usually looked down upon, for someone to move out before being married.
Birth & Baptismal Rites
It is customary for a Gryphon child to be taken flying, carried by their parents, very soon after birth.
Coming of Age Rites
Generally, Adrizrehanians consider a young Gryphon to have come of age when they can fly unassisted. The equivalent age among other races is typically considered to be fifteen. At this point, they usually undergo a year of military training. At the end of this training, they receive a sword and crossbow. If they are a mage, they also receive a basic magical conduit.
Funerary and Memorial customs
In Adrizrehanian funerals, the deceased's body is typically cremated and placed within a small hollowed-out statue of themselves. This statue is typically kept in the family home.
Common Taboos
Cleanliness is seen as paramount among Adrizrehanians. Being unclean is seen as incredibly shameful, and there have been a few instances of families disowning their children for continuous bad hygiene.
Politeness and propriety are very important to Adrizrehanians. Excessive public displays of affection are considered improper, as are sudden emotional outbursts. Failing to address a person in the correct manner is considered a serious insult. These rules do not apply to a person within their own private residence.
Ideals
Beauty Ideals
Physical fitness is incredibly important to Adrizrehanians, and being weak or fat is considered quite shameful.
Gender Ideals
In regards to gender, Adrizrehanians are generally egalitarian. Gender holds no bearing on what a citizen can do with their life.
Courtship Ideals
Courtship among Adrizrehanians can be initiated by either gender. It is typically initiated with a meaningful, but not too expensive gift, along with a declaration of intent. If the initial gift is too expensive, the receiver of the gift will likely see it as a bribe, and be insulted. They will also be insulted if the gift is not relevant to them, such as if a person who can't fight receives a weapon, or an artist receives baking ingredients. Trying to initiate courtship with a total stranger is typically frowned upon.
After initiation, if the gift is accepted, the potential couple try to spend time with and learn about each other. If this is successful, they typically proceed to marriage.
Marriages are typically somewhat subdued compared to some other cultures, since excessively boisterous weddings are considered unseemly. During such a celebration, as well as most other large celebrations, the normal rules of propriety are relaxed somewhat, but not entirely ignored. It is common for there to be a separate, private celebration afterwards, which allows for most rules of propriety to be ignored.
Relationship Ideals
Adrizrehanians generally prefer monogamous relationships.
