2015 - 05/13 - Journal of Thelga, priestess of Saranrae

General Summary

On behalf of the Church of Saranrae, I accompanied a team of adventurers to explore the catacombs that have opened up under one of the municipal buildings. Mostly, the team seemed worried about possible attack and wished to have a healer accompany them, since their own cleric, Nightshade, was considered insufficient for the task. Considering her temperament, I agree with this assessment and was content to accompany them for a standard fee paid to the temple.

The basement really did contain a catacombs, which appears to have a complex of tunnels and rooms without much planning or forethought involved in their construction. If not for the brickwork and obvious signs of previous habitation, I would have assumed it a natural construction or that of underground burrowers. It is an odd place.

It is also full of the undead, though full may be something of an exaggeration. We’ve come across two varieties so far: ghouls and zombies. All the zombies appear to have been troglodytes in life, which is baffling to me. I thought the troglodytes had been wiped out near Sandpoint, but I suppose it’s possible they were simply driven underground as the humans and elves settled here. Perhaps the dwaven enclaves know more.

The company has taken possession of some masks that were being used as decoration in one of the early rooms. They seem harmless enough—the masks, I mean. The company are a danger to themselves moreso than anyone else, which I consider something of a blessing in and of itself. In spite of the presence of two people with the capability and understanding of traps, we have triggered several trapped doors and statues in this area. It seems hugging statuary is a thing people do now.

Speaking of things people do now, Rygor has been decidedly obsessed with not fully destroying the undead we come upon and instead desires to turn them for his own nefarious purposes. This worries me for obvious reasons. Tessara grew disturbingly fond of his one successful turning, a troglodyte zombie she affectionately began calling “Squishy.” But, since Rygor managed to set “Squishy” on other undead menaces in the area, I suppose he can’t be considered all bad. It just concerns me that we have an open necromancer practicing so close to the city. I will keep these concerns to myself for the time being and will not report him to Father Abstalar. After an exhausting day of delving, our party decided to turn back after Arberitha was severely bitten by a ghoul and began to feel dizzy and ill. I suspect she may have contracted ghoul fever and advised she return to the temple for care. We will reconvene tomorrow to resume our explorations. , “Squishy” in tow.
