Being a tree whisper was once a treasured and used gift.  As of the last few hundred years or so, it has become illegal to practice, unless for the government to spy for them.
The ability to talk to plants is a unique and rare talent that few possess.  This often gets people into the business of knowing everyone else's business.  Some are great at connecting those who could use each other for heists, others ruin marriages and out cheaters for a living.  Anything from gossip to robbing banks, a tree whisper can change your life with the things they know just from talking with the trees.

Those who practice this illegally, for money will often be paid to find out information about someone.  They can be private investigators or can get blackmail on people which they might have wished to never see the light of day.  If a tree saw it, a tree whisper can know it happened.

Tree Whispers can usually charge insane amounts for their work as it is a rare gift.  You could also say part of their payment is their client's silence on the service they provided, but if the client were to go to the police, the trees would surely know.  If the trees know, then someone in this line of work has the kind of connections that can ruin your life.  In fact, most tree whispers only work with those they know information on that could destroy their lives.

Other Benefits

Nobody sneaks up on a tree whisper, and they often know if anyone has even whispered their name.  They can also be great at stratigiesing for a heist and can see in the dark, behind them and all around if trees are there to warn them of things around them.
