Jungle Maw
"It's like a meaty bear trap that swallows you whole and drags you deep beneath the soil. On second thought, nothing like a bear trap." -Beedle WanderstoneThe jungle maw is a deadly ambush hunter noteworthy of its incredibly strong claws which it uses to burrow tunnels through the thick roots of the Great Vorthali Forest.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The jungle maw can reach lengths over 12 feet and weigh over 600 pounds. Its head, which composes around a third of its total length, is long, flat, and bill-shaped. Its mouth has no bones, including a lack of teeth, but can open to near 180 degrees. Fully opened, the mouth can be over four feet wide. The jungle maw's feet have four toes, each growing a large claw. Its skin is extremely thick with many wrinkles and is usually light brown or grey in color.
Dietary Needs and Habits
The jungle maw feeds by burrowing a near-vertical tunnel to the surface and opening its mouth flat with the ground. It then waits for unsuspecting prey to step inside, using its strong jaw muscles to clamp closed, and drags the prey beneath the ground where escape is almost impossible. The jungle maw will attempt to eat most any creature that it can drag into its burrow.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Jungle maw eyesight is poor, but it is very sensitive to vibrations, allowing it to sense potential prey from underground.
