Capybara

"When I first saw the Capybara, I was amazed such a peaceful and poorly dexterous creature survived in the jungle. I stayed close to them to learn their secret. One night, I was able to sneak amongst them, but just as I reached the center of the herd, I stepped on a fallen twig. The noise jolted the creatures away and an awful smell filled the air, followed shortly by a bright flash. I learned that when approaching sleeping Capybaras, always awake them from a distance."   -from My Days in the Jungle by Ferdinand Hertalson
Although these huge rodents, the size of a large dog, are considered generally harmless, Capybaras are often called "pig torches" because of their tendency to release highly combustible flatulence which they ignite with static from their tail.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The capybara has a heavy, round body around four feet in length and weighing on average 150 pounds. They have reddish-brown fur that often appears blackened from their defensive combustion. They have short legs with lightly webbed feet, which give the capybara an excellent ability to swim.   Although researches have yet to discover what makes capybara flatulence explosive, they believe it is similar to a skunk's spray.

Ecology and Habitats

Capybara live near water, often a pond, lake, river, or even flooded savannah. They are quite resilient to change in habitat and have been considered for herding.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Capybaras are herbivores, eating mostly grasses and fallen fruit, but are very selective; they will only eat specific grasses if they are green and only eat fruit that has ripened, but not spoiled.

Additional Information

Social Structure

While their volatile gas is seen most often used as a defense, male capybaras are also known to compete for territory, with the winner having the biggest explosion.
