Anesloth Species in Zantin | World Anvil

Anesloth

"I believe the anesloth might be one of the most dangerous animals in Vorthal, if everything would just move at half-speed. Which fortunately for the anesloth, he produces a scent that does can make everything slow down to a halt."   -Ferdinand Hertalson
Also known as the three-toed giant sloth, the anesloth is notoriously lazy and lacks the arboreal lifestyle of the similarly figured two-toed sloth, although researchers are unsure of any relation between them. The anesloth also produces an odor that is capable of inducing sleep.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The anesloth stands around ten feet tall, from head to toe, and can weigh up to 600 pounds. They have three claws on their hindlimbs and two on their forelimbs, but still tend to move on all four limbs. They also grow a short tail. Anesloths have a long, white fur coat which catches in the dense undergrowth of the jungle resulting in a dark-green or brown appearance.
"If it starts smelling like a fish died in a moldy sock, go the other way."   -Voran Wayfinder
The anesloth's scent is notorious for being particularly noxious, in low concentration giving other animals a feeling of nausea or dizziness and in higher concentrations forcing them to sleep.

Dietary Needs and Habits

While the anesloth doesn't hang from trees like the two-toed sloth, it does still reside beneath them, eating the leaves or fruits laxly. Anesloths are usually quite peaceful, given that the powerful scent the produce keeps most predators at bay. Their lazy demeanor can turn extremely aggressive, however, when backed into a corner.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Anesloths are believed to have a terrible sense of hearing, due to their small ear canals, but have incredible eyesight. They are also thought to have a sensitivity to vibrations.
