Journal 38: Under the City Lies Madness

For a flooded undercity there is suspiciously little water. What mysteries lie underneath the city plagued by paranoia?

Created by Wren for the Valdorin campaign

General Summary

Our merry band of heroes decides to go underwater, and enter the cave system. After a little swimming, we find a greenish shell of mucus. With some pushing, we manage to get through; we enter the undercity! There is no water here, luckily. We disguise ourselves as cultists with the robes we got from the now ex-cultists. Wren reads a story from the wall. It is written in a weird sort of unknown language. It tells about a group of illithid that want to attack gith, to overtake their territory. The illithid were defeated. The one who made the writing on the wall is now alone. Wren actually knows something about illithid and gith and tells the rest about them.

The illithid kite!

After some looking around we find a grave. It is the grave of St. Von Muir. He is the forefather of the Raven Queen temple high priest that we met in the city above. We also find dwarves that are mindlessly mining. Some ape-like creatures are on patrol; they look fierce. We disguise Shynt as an illithid (or whatever Rael expects an illithid to look like), which fools the ape creatures! Following the map towards the forge, we find that all that is left there are piles of corpses. Most are missing their brains. The stacks are ordered by race and height. After entering some sort of laboratory, we are attacked! An elf and a human attack us; they seemed to be dead or sleeping before. After we defeat them, their brains animate and skitter away.   Then, the brains attack! Eww. Shynt becomes very dumb after a brain attacked him. Rael destroys one brain; the other runs away. A voice speaks! It tells us that we should go away. We ignore it and move on to another tunnel. At the end of this tunnel we find a giant nautiloid shell that is sort of a space ship. It is in very bad shape, but has been patched up in places. It turns out that it crashed from space into the mountain, exiting here. The path it left is still traversable.

Heading inside the abandoned alien vessel

Inside the ship we find Farrell Rosa, in a glass container/cell. We manage to get her out (note to self: never press random buttons). After a while, we find a machine room, which has a helmet of mind shielding. Some rooms we find have illusory illithid; one has a patch of hair. Do they turn people into illithid? We ruin a space suit we find in a closet and burn some more brainless corpses. Then we trash some more rooms.   After traversing back through the ship we find a woman, which has some sort of wire from her running back into another room. It is some sort of puppet creature; after we fight it, it retracts the cable as the woman disapears into red goo. We follow the retreating wire and fight more red goo, which is lurking inside the walls of the ship. A fireball finishes the creature.
