The Struggle Atop the Mountain

Atop the aptly named Frost-Flame Peak lies a glacier burning like a fresh bloom of superheated steal. Its white glow brightens the horizon in a perpetual dawn. This is the result of the unending battle between the goddess Cairen, her flame unending, and the deity Barilus, their inevitable cold ever consuming.   Legend says that Cairen once ruled in this land uncontested for millennia, bringing rebirth and fertile ground. After the sundering her peak and holy sight shifted ever northward, into the realm of Barilus. When Barilus witnessed this affront to their dominion they reached out with their divinity and covered the flame of Cairen. Thus began the struggle atop the mountain, with Cairens last true holy sight in peril of being snuffed out forever, and the reach of Barilus to spread to the lands bellow.   It is said that Barilus's attention being drawn so heavily toward this conflict is the reason why the Hook never sees harsh winters. The battle for dominance has also brought many worshipers of Cairen to the site and its adjacent city of Frotenyæger. Near to the holy site these pilgrims and followers pray and seek to aid their goddess in her struggle. There lies a warning to all who make this journey however; "Do not venture to closely to the divine battle of these gods, for each who has gazed upon the struggle gazes now upon only emptiness."   One such "pilgrim" made this journey in search of answers of a more mundane source. This now blind sceptic says what he witnessed upon the peak was simply a type a stone encased in ice, kept ever cold and ever frozen by its closeness to the heavens. He claims to have ventured with apparatuses to shield his eyes and lungs from the extreme light and height. His efforts proved to have failed, as he was found lost in the mountains by Cairen priests. The priests proclaimed his act was an offense to their god and thus she punished him by circumventing his protective gear and blinding him just the same.
