Birinia

Birinia is much more sparsely populated than the other nations of the Takhreib, and has a largely pastoral society. The Birini are famed for their horsemanship, and Birini horses are coveted across the entire Nelkheti Empire. The nation's geography is dominated by plains and savannahs, while the Eastern Zouranes separate Birinia from the Zelfan Desert. Much of the nation's population is concentrated around the Kebrai River, and the border with Rihal.

Culture

Much of the Birini population are semi-nomadic shepherds, raising and protecting their flocks of sheep and cattle from horseback. Most traditional Birini customs originated among this culture, and prior to their liberation by the World-King, the Birini viewed horses as sacred animals. The Birini were historically known not only as expert riders, but also as some of th ebest archers on Zada, and they have translated this skill into proficiency with modern firearms.   The traditional Birini way of life is, of course, highly respected by the World-King, who has used Birini as scouts and skirmishers in his armies for five centuries to great effect. Any suggestion that there is tension between traditional Birini and the industrialising cities whose populations often adopt Nelkheti or Rihalite customs is inaccurate, and there is no discord as a result of modern pastoral techniques being introduced to the nation. There is ever harmony within the World-King's domain.

History

Birinia was united into a single kingdom several cnturies before the World-King's descending, but was never a major power in the Takhreib. It was often the main theatre of conflict between Rihal and Bagara, the two most powerful nations prior to the unification of Zada. They both had interest in securing their borders against the other, and in securing the loyalty of the famed Birini cavalry, who proved decisive in many battles prior to, and following, the descending.   The cycle of Birinia's playing major powers off each other, only to be inevitably subjugated by one of them, was broken when the World-King liberated the Bagarans from their misguided monarch. In the coalition wars that followed, Birinia was eventually brought into the World-King's domain, where it has ever since enjoyed boundless prosperity, and long-awaited peace.

Agriculture & Industry

Birinia is the largest provider of animal products to the rest of Zada. It provides the other nations with large amounts of meat, wool, milk, and so forth, which are either sold direclty, processed into refined goods in Birinia's cities, or exported to the more industrialised nations for the same purpose.
