Werewolves - An Introduction
Generic article | Feb 13, 2025

A race that thrives in the darkest forests and famous for their immense strength, brutality and intrinsic bond with nature.

Anatomy & Sensory Capabilities

Like vampires, werewolves share strikingly similar anatomy with humans, largely because of their origins. However, there are a number of qualities that clearly separate them. Their arms are long and slender, matching the length of their legs, which facilitate agile movement on all fours and they possess elongated, sharp claws specifically designed for grabbing and slicing through their prey. Werewolves also feature long, pointy ears that extend out the sides of their heads. Additionally, they boast sharp, jagged teeth perfectly designed for piercing flesh and drawing the blood of their victims, which consist of cattle, deer, sheep and swine.
In addition, these canine creatures boast an extraordinary sense of sight, hearing and smell. These heightened senses allow them to detect even the faintest sounds and scents from great distances. This enhanced perception makes them formidable hunters under the cover of night. They can also control the movement of their ears to hone in on specific sounds, allowing them to track their prey with uncanny precision. Moreover, their keen eyesight enables them to see in complete darkness, giving them a significant advantage when navigating the shadows. As a result, their hunting skills are not just a product of strength and speed, but also of an almost supernatural awareness of their surroundings.   A werewolf can willingly change their transformation stage, which ranges from 1-10 on what they call the "Beastie Scale", where 1 is "human with light fur" and 10 is "Large, muscly, furry wolf".

Extraordinary Powers & Abilities

These fearless creatures are endowed with an astonishing set of powers such as extraordinary strength, speed, swimming prowess, agility, and acute night vision among others. In addition, they possess the ability to transform into various canine forms, including dogs, wolves, coyotes, and foxes. While they can learn to take on other animal shapes through magic, this proves to be significantly more challenging due to their lower affinity for magical practice compared to vampires.
However, their most well-known ability is arguably their most dangerous. Werewolves possess a profound, innate bond with their natural surroundings, granting them the ability to manipulate and shape the natural environment to their advantage. They can summon trees to serve as formidable barriers and shields, conjure thick vines to ensnare their opponents, or unleash powerful waves of water to topple their adversaries. Similarly, they possess the ability to manipulate the fundamental elements of nature, including fire, water, earth, air, metal, lightning, and more. This mastery allows them to create devastating attacks or reinforce their defences in ways that seem almost supernatural. As guardians of the wild, they are both feared and revered, seen as protectors of nature and warriors against those who threaten their realm.

Reproduction Process

The reproduction process of werewolves is very similar to that of actual wolves, namely that the gestation period is sixty to sixty-three days, the pups are delivered in dens made beneath the branches of spruce trees and a female can have up six pups at a time. The main difference is that when a female werewolf begins to show signs of pregnancy, she would turn "full wolf" to reduce difficulty in movement and discomfort during labour.

Diet

Werewolves are entirely carnivorous, feasting solely on a wide variety of flesh. Their diet typically consists of anything from small game like rabbits, avians and rodents to larger prey such as cattle and deer, depending on their location and size. This relentless pursuit of meat is driven by their heightened senses and acute instincts, making them formidable hunters under the cover of night.

Behaviour

Similar to vampires, werewolves are incredibly territorial, seldom yielding to rivals without engaging in a brutal, bloody confrontation. In their early days, these creatures marked their territory by urinating at the base of trees, establishing the boundaries of their chosen land. However, as they evolved and gained human-like intelligence, they adopted a more refined method to designate their domain: runes. Different werewolf family and subspecies began inscribing specific runes on trees, rocks, soil, and other surfaces, each symbol denoting their unique element or clan.
In stark contrast to the blood-sucking creatures, werewolves aren't particularly concerned with cleanliness. They revel in mud baths and love to roll around in the dirt, often naked. However, despite their wild nature, they still dedicate time to grooming, ensuring their fur, hair, and teeth are free from dirt.

Subspecies

Much like vampires, these remarkable canines exhibit exceptional adaptability, allowing them to flourish in diverse environments. However, they showcase an more impressive range of variations, with multiple flavours of them inhabiting every biome across Ysteria.

Wolves of the Woods

The Wolves of the Woods are the most common type of werewolf in Ysteria. They are known for their ferocity and cunning, often hunting in packs during the full moon. Legends say their howl can be heard echoing through the trees, striking fear into the hearts of those who venture too close to their territory. Despite their terrifying reputation, some believe that they possess a deep connection to the forest and its mysteries. Those who have encountered them often speak of an unsettling intelligence in their eyes, hinting at a tragic past that binds them to their savage existence.

Wolves of the Sand

The Wolves of the Sand inhabit the expansive deserts and arid regions of Ysteria. As a nomadic species, they skillfully thrive on limited resources, having adapted remarkably to endure the harsh conditions of their environment. Their complex social structures and exceptional hunting abilities enable them to tackle the challenges they face with efficiency. Elusive by nature, these werewolves are seldom spotted by outsiders, relying on their acute senses and remarkable agility to remain hidden. Despite their solitary tendencies, they forge strong family bonds that are vital to the survival of their kin.

Wolves of the Tundra

The Wolves of the Tundra roam the frigid and unforgiving landscapes of Ysteria. With their striking white coats and piercing blue eyes, they seamlessly blend into their icy surroundings, embodying both majesty and elusiveness. These remarkable beings have mastered the harsh conditions, relying on their sharp senses and pack hunting techniques to thrive in this relentless environment. Their haunting howls resonate across the frozen expanse, serving as a ghostly reminder of their presence in the tundra.

Wolves of the Wetlands

Wolves of the Wetlands reside in the wet, swampy regions of Ysteria. Aggressive and mysterious, they are known for their cunning hunting tactics and eerie howls that echo through the fog. Few dare to venture into their territory, as the werewolves are fiercely protective of their domain. They also seem to wield an uncanny sense of direction, navigating effortlessly through the labyrinth of foliage and water. Legends suggest that those who cross paths with them may never return, swallowed by the very mists that cloak their eerie realm.

Wolves of the Underrealms

Whispers abound, shrouded in mystery, about the Wolves of the Underrealm prowling the fringes of Ysteria, a land rife with malevolent spirits and sinister shadows. These werewolves, revered as the guardians of ancient secrets and dark phantoms, possess an extraordinary skill to meld into the darkness, silently stalking their prey. Folklore warns of their piercing yellow eyes, which shimmer ominously in the night; to lock eyes with them is to face a fate worse than death, having one's very essence torn from the body and condemned to wander the realms of the Never After.

If I understand it correctly your werewolves don’t transform with the full moon but are always in this form. Can they willingly change their appearance between one and ten or is that fixed for each wolf?

Nope, the full moon has no effect on their transformation but they do believe that it can enhance one's powers, intelligence, wisdom and strength. And yes, all werewolves can willingly change their appearance on the Beastie scale :)
