Cataena (Kah-TAY-nah)

Defences

Mountain Walls and Fortresses: Cataena is virtually unassailable thanks to the chain of mountain fortresses and natural barriers that guard its borders. The city employs artillery towers with steam-powered cannons, and electrified barriers protect key gates during siege events.   Anti-Air Defenses: Cataena’s mountaintop fortresses are equipped with steam-powered cannons capable of targeting enemy airships. Watchtowers use Magha-fueled spotlights to identify threats during the night.

Industry & Trade

Hydroelectric Power Export: Cataena exports excess electricity to nearby settlements, earning wealth and influence over Vauren’s other cities.   Mountain Mining: Mines around Cataena yield iron, copper, and Magha Crystals, essential for both industrial production and magical rituals.   Weapons Production: Blacksmiths and engineers specialize in electric-enhanced weapons, such as charged rifles and staves for Artt users.

Infrastructure

Fortified Castles and Strongholds: The outer edges of the city are protected by fortresses built into the mountainside, linked by watchtowers and gates. Many of the city's roads are carved directly into the mountains, forming high stone bridges and tunnels.   Efficient Electric Grid: Cataena boasts one of the most stable electrical grids in the Furiconia Empire, powered by a hydroelectric plant fed by rivers flowing through the mountains. Magha-enhanced batteries store power to prevent blackouts, giving the city a strategic advantage over Fronthé. Streetlamps, homes, and public spaces are consistently lit, ensuring safe movement even at night.   Public Steamworks: Though Cataena has embraced electricity, it maintains its steamworks infrastructure as a backup system. Public trams and elevators along the cliffs use steam power to ensure movement in case of outages.

Guilds and Factions

Order of Quisai: Beyond their military role, the Order embodies Quisai's principles of curiosity, humility, and empowerment. They maintain a delicate balance between serving the Governor and inspiring the population to explore knowledge and foster unity.   Artificers' Guild: Inventors and engineers push the boundaries of both electricity and Magha magic, aligning with Quisai’s teachings of balancing power with responsibility.   The Merchant Syndicate: The merchants oversee the trade of weapons, power, and crystals, maintaining control over regional markets, especially with cities like Culu.

Points of interest

The Statue of Quisai: Modeled after the Christ the Redeemer, this colossal statue embodies both protection and unity. Quisai’s outstretched arms symbolize enlightenment, curiosity, and the interconnectedness of all things. At night, the statue glows with subtle Magha light, drawing pilgrims to reflect on her teachings, especially during seasonal festivals.   The Governor’s Palace: A grand castle built into the cliffs, it houses the Governor and high-ranking members of the Order of Quisai. A library of magical artifacts resides within, protected by knights trained in both combat and Artt rituals, mirroring Quisai's balance between knowledge and humility.   The Market of Chains: Named after Cataena’s symbol of unity, this market offers rare enchanted weapons and artifacts, with merchants adhering to Quisai’s philosophy of fair trade and empowerment over control.   The Forge of Arksun: Here, the finest Magha-powered armor and weapons are crafted. Rumors suggest that the city's early mecha suits were born in these forges, combining steam engineering with Quisai’s philosophical ideals of harmony.

Architecture

Blending Stone and Spirituality: The city's architecture reflects a fusion of Spanish arches and Greek columns, with many homes featuring courtyards and gardens, embodying both beauty and spiritual reflection. Iron railings and marble sculptures display the city's pride, often inscribed with phrases honoring Quisai’s values.   Fortified Civilian Homes: Even ordinary homes are built with defense in mind—reinforced walls and doors—reminders of Cataena’s long history of conflict.

Climate

Mountainous and Cool: Perched along cliffs and valleys, the city experiences misty mornings, mild summers, and cool winters. Frequent spring rains feed the rivers that power the hydroelectric plant.

Natural Resources

Terraced Farms and Dense Forests: The people maintain terraced farms, a symbol of their harmony with nature, an ideal closely tied to Quisai's belief in balance.   Mining Wealth: Rich deposits of copper, iron, and Magha Crystals provide both economic stability and a source of spiritual power. The city's dependency on these crystals aligns with Quisai’s teachings of curiosity tempered by responsibility, ensuring they use magic wisely.   Hydroelectric Edge: Rivers running through the mountains are the lifeblood of Cataena, giving the city a strategic energy advantage and reinforcing its leadership in the region.
