Tremorspeak Language in Yrnath | World Anvil

Tremorspeak

Tremorspeak is a form of communication that relies on using slight vibrations in the ground or another solid object. The language gets its name due to its connection to tremorsense, a type of sense that relies on vibrations to determine an object's relative position. Despite tremorsense having been widely understood for centuries, tremorspeak is a relatively new discovery. The language was initially discovered by researchers studying earth elementals. The researchers noted that the elementals seemed to vibrate ever so slightly when around other earth elementals, a behavior which was not observed in other types of elementals. For many years, it was assumed that this language was exclusive to earth elementals, until a separate team of researchers discovered a similar phenomenon occurring in certain types of giant worms. Further research revealed that this wasn't a trait exclusive to a handful of species, but was instead an aspect of the creatures' tremorsense. Thanks to the amount of research already done to understand how tremorsense works, research into tremorspeak became significantly easier, as the language functions quite similarly to the sense.   While it is possible for a creature without tremorsense to learn tremorspeak, it is an extremely difficult process. Creatures with tremorsense already have a heightened ability to distinguish the finer aspects of vibrations when compared to creatures without tremorsense, as well as the ability to more finely control how their body produces vibrations. Without these abilities, not only is it extremely difficult to decipher tremorspeak messages, but it becomes virtually impossible to speak it in a way that a fluent individual would recognize. There are some pieces of arcanotech that have been developed that are capable of listening to and deciphering tremorspeak messages, but they lack the ability to transmit out those messages to other creatures. Due to the complexities of this language, it is unlikely that a device capable of speaking tremorspeak will ever be perfected, though there are those who are attempting it regardless.
