Blaat (blaːt)

Probably the most common alcoholic drink in Yðuun, Blaat exists in a sheer endless variety of flavors, colors, and qualities. From the cheap, brown, slimy drink that might smell a bit sour and is handed to you in a shady inn amid the swamp trees in central Noron to the fruity, sparkling beverage served in the cathedrals of Manhatt'an and the almost tasteless milky white drop, which nevertheless does its job of getting you hella drunk, served in the desert taverns on Djell, there is almost no end to what can be called Blaat. What unites all of these various drinks, though, is the recipe that contains at least four fundamental ingredients: water, some type of grain, and a bacterium that can usually be found on the surface of rotting wood (many people just use old barrels or add a rotting wooden plank to their production basins). Whatever one find suitable to add into the mix on top of this trinity, is fully up to one's taste--and probably that of the customers. Especially the high society on Ynora has in recent years become fond of those types of Blaat that filter the alcohol after the fermentation process, leaving a clear liquid, which they then often carbonize before drinking to add that extra something for refreshment.

History

Nobody can really be sure just about how long Blaat has been around, but legend has it that Inyo, wanting to add something to the outer shell of Humans, first thought of Blaat and only later decided to use Aëtha. Wouldn't it be great if all of us actually had Blaat instead of a soul?   The earliest mentions of Blaat throughout history can be found in the stories from some of the oldest God books--mainly depicting drunken Gods trying to find their way home but instead falling asleep on the sidewalk. This shows that Blaat must really be old, as nobody could ever fake anything from those books!
