Fortress Monasteries of the Order of the Phoenix

Fortress Monasteries of the Order of the Phoenix

Created by King Arthur and Merlin Ambrosius, the Fortress Monasteries of the Order of the Phoenix serve as hidden bastions of knowledge, training, and refuge for the Dovahkiin and their allies. Strategically located throughout North and South Azure, these hidden fortresses are safeguarded by ancient dragon magic, making them imperceptible to all but those marked by the Dragon Mark or Dragon Tattoo.

Structural Design & Concealment

Each Fortress Monastery is designed for secrecy, with two hidden entrances:

  1. Primary Entrance (Beneath a Prominent Structure)
  2. In North Azure, monasteries are built underground beneath fortresses, grand libraries, or sacred temples.
  3. Access requires activating a hidden mechanism, usually disguised as a statue, bookcase, or altar, that only reacts to the Dragon Mark.
  4. Example: Harker’s Keep has a concealed stairway within its Great Hall, leading directly into the monastery below.
  5. Secondary Entrance (Remote Cave or Natural Passageway)
  6. This entrance is disguised as a natural cave or hidden tunnel located outside the structure but within a reasonable distance.
  7. These caves often appear as collapsed rock formations, waterfalls, or overgrown ruins, accessible only to those who know what to look for.
  8. Some entrances require speaking a Draconic phrase or touching a concealed sigil to reveal the path.

Special Case: Harker’s Keep – Dragon Access

  • Harker’s Keep is one of the largest monasteries in North Azure, fully equipped for Dovahkiin and their dragons.
  • Its cavernous entrance allows dragon riders to fly directly into the monastery, making it one of the most important strongholds of the Order.
  • The flight path is shielded by illusion magic, ensuring that even a large dragon entering or exiting remains undetected.

Surface Structures & the Pendragons' Vision

Unlike the underground strongholds that remain hidden from the world, many Fortress Monasteries have surface structures that serve as centers of learning, healing, and wisdom, accessible to the common folk of the realm.

The Pendragons' Passion for Education & Service

The Pendragons believed that knowledge should be shared and that all people, regardless of status, should have access to education and healing. To fulfill this vision, several Fortress Monasteries have developed renowned schools, gardens, and healing centers, strengthening the Pendragon legacy as kings of the people.

  • Commoners may enter the surface structures freely, receiving guidance, education, and healing, unaware of the hidden fortress beneath their feet.
  • Non-Dovahkiin must be guided or brought to these monasteries, and once they leave, they remember their visit but cannot recall the way back, ensuring the secrecy of the Order.
  • These revered monasteries have become legendary landmarks, celebrated for their service to the people while secretly protecting the legacy of the Dovahkiin.

Common Areas (Accessible to All Order Members & Marked Servants)

1. The Grand Hall

A vast chamber used for gatherings, feasts, and ceremonies. The ceiling is enchanted to resemble the night sky, shifting between the real sky above and historical constellations significant to the Order.

2. The Training Grounds

A large combat arena where knights, paladins, and monks train in martial and magical combat. Illusion spells and summoning circles allow for controlled combat scenarios against simulated foes.

3. The Library of Embers

A vast collection of historical records, arcane scrolls, and tactical tomes chronicling the history of the Order, the Dovahkiin, and their war against the darkness. The library is protected by guardian spirits that only allow members of the Order to read its texts.

4. The Phoenix Forge

A sacred smithy, where master blacksmiths craft weapons and armor infused with dragonfire. The forge’s eternal flame was said to be ignited by Merlin himself and is tended by skilled artificers of the Order.

5. The Healing Sanctuary

A tranquil space filled with alchemical potions, enchanted herbs, and divine relics where clerics and healers mend wounds and cure ailments. A font of sacred water lies at the center, said to have restorative properties.

6. The Chapel of the Eternal Flame

A hallowed sanctuary where members of the Order come to pray, meditate, and commune with divine and draconic spirits.

7. The Common Quarters

Where Knights, monks, and scholars of the Order reside. The layout consists of shared dormitories, small meditation chambers, and personal storage spaces for the initiates and senior members. These dormitories are located on the surface as well as the underground complex depending on rank and duties. Dormitories are also set aside for visitors who spend the night at the complex.

The Common Quarters for the servants of the Order.

Each Fortress Monastery has designated living areas for its members, divided by rank and duty:

  • Aspirants' Quarters (Scarlet and Gold Robes)
  • Aspirants are non-bonded squires serving as guards, stewards, and groundskeepers for the surface structures.
  • Higher-ranking Aspirants with the Dragon Mark Tattoo serve both above and below ground.
  • They reside in communal dormitories near the surface entrance.
  • Neophytes' Quarters (Scarlet and Gold Robes)
  • Neophytes are bonded squires who have hatched and bonded with a dragon.
  • They serve under knights until knighthood is achieved.
  • Their quarters are closer to the dragon stalls for easy access to their bonded dragons.
  • Acolytes & Apprentices' Quarters (Blue and Gold Robes)
  • Acolytes serve in religious, arcane, and scholarly capacities, assisting in rituals, magic, and research.
  • Apprentices train under masters in combat, tactics, and leadership.
  • They reside in private or semi-private rooms, near the library or chapel.
  • Essential Personnel Quarters (Yellow and Black Robes)
  • These include cooks, smiths, healers, and logistics staff who maintain the monastery.
  • Their quarters are adjacent to the kitchens, storage areas, and healing sanctuary.
  • Students' Quarters (If Surface Structures Include Schools) (Green and Black Robes)
  • If a monastery has an attached academy, students reside in structured dormitories and wear green and black robes.

8. The Sacred Baths

A series of underground hot springs imbued with purifying magic, allowing members of the Order to cleanse their bodies and spirits. The waters are known to enhance one’s connection to draconic energy. These sacred Bathes also exist as hot springs for the surface complex as well.

9. Dragon Stalls

  • Each monastery has a large, open-air cavern or an underground chamber where dragons can rest in their true form.
  • The floors are covered in magically warmed stone to provide comfort for the dragons.
  • Each stall is reinforced with draconic runes, ensuring protection and security.

10. The Vault of Saddles & Flight Gear

  • A secured chamber where the Order stores specialized dragon-riding saddles, harnesses, and equipment.
  • Some saddles are enchanted to bond with a specific dragon, ensuring only their rider can use them.

Kitchen

The kitchen is a spacious, functional area designed for preparing meals for both the surface complex and the underground fortress. It needs to be capable of handling large quantities of food while maintaining a high level of efficiency and cleanliness. This is not just a place to cook, but also a critical part of the monastery’s self-sufficiency and communal environment.

Grand Dining Hall

The grand dining hall is an impressive space that serves as a communal gathering place for members of the Order, as well as for non-Order visitors and scholars who come to the monastery to learn. It is designed not only for feasts but also for daily communal meals, where Knights, Scholars, Aspirants, Neophytes, Acolytes, Students, and visiting guests can share in their meals and fellowship.

Integration with the Complexes

  • The kitchen serves both the surface complex (which is open to commoners and visitors) and the hidden underground fortress, ensuring that all members of the Order and their guests are well-fed.
  • Both the grand dining hall and kitchen have a certain ceremonial quality, making them ideal for hosting important feasts, gatherings, and educational events.
  • The connection to the rest of the monastery ensures that the Order’s daily functions and rituals are supported by a strong foundation of sustenance, both in the spiritual and physical sense.

These additions reflect the practicality and magnificence of the Order of the Phoenix, reinforcing its commitment to community, service, and the Pendragon legacy.
