Hammerhead Rhino

Hammerhead rhinos are large domesticated herbivores found in the warm savannas of Tropacia and Aekor. They are a common creature and have been domesticated for thousands of years to carry large amounts of resources across deserts and other treacherous terrains that most harmonids couldn't.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They have a very stocky build, and have a thick, light grey, leathery skin that is very hard to penetrate. They have a large head with a hollow crest, which points up and out in a T shape. These have many ridges and spikes on them. This crest differs between each animal and is how they are unique. They have four short, strongly built legs which can withstand miles of walking carrying a heavy load. They have a short tail ending in a club with three spikes on it.

Genetics and Reproduction

Mating season is in February-March. Males will battle it out in order to win a female, using their horns and locking with other males, and they will attempt to flip the other over on their backs. Hammerhead rhinos give birth to live young. Gestation period is about 450 days, and babies are born in May. Babies are about 10cm long. The parents are extremely protective of their young, and will risk their lives for them.

Ecology and Habitats

These mammals thrive in hot climates. They spend most of their time round shallow pools, preferably without predators lurking in the waters. They eat on the dry grasses they find and they are constantly in search of more food to eat. They require little shade, as the crest on their head helps cool them down, the same way swamp snappers use their back sail to cool themselves off in the swamps.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Hammerhead rhinos are strictly herbivorous. They munch on the short grasses and bushes they find in the dry savannahs. They can survive about 2 weeks without drinking water as they have methods of recycling the water in their bodies to sustain them. They must eat a lot of food however to maintain body weight and muscle mass.

Additional Information

Domestication

For thousands of years, hammerhead rhinos have been domesticated, used to collect milk, to defend villages, and to carry heavy materials across the wilderness to other settlements. They were relatively easy to domesticate, due to their docile and placid nature. Hammerhead rhinos are commonly found in poorer settlements, where they do not have the necessary technology or magic to carry large amounts of resources far away, so they use the rhinos.
