Giant wasps are an apex predator in the
Sarabar Swamp on
Greenerth. They are one of the few creatures that pose genuine threats to the population of
Aar-Aori.
Anatomy
An incredibly tough exoskeleton protects their three major body parts: the head, body, and thorax. Their heads are relatively small, with large mandibles and large eyes, and extremely long antenna. Their bodies are very small, and attached are three pairs of long, hairy legs. Their thoraxes are extremely large, with a blade-like stinger on the end. These insects have an upright position, unlike its smaller wasp cousins.
Reproduction
Maze Nests
When setting up a colony, a giant wasp queen will fly in search for a large gallor, big enough for her colony. Once a large enough gallor is found, the wasps get to work on creating an intricate maze of dead wood, collected from surrounding trees that they inject with their venom to kill them.
Queens
Each wasp nest is home to just a single queen. This queen is roughly three times the size of an average giant wasp, making for a terrifying animal. This queen's entire life is spent laying eggs, which hatch into new workers and nanny wasps. The adult nanny wasps take the eggs and bring them into the nursery for hatching.
Diet
As an apex predator giant wasps can eat almost anything, and will. These wasps are carnivorous, having been recorded taking down a variety of creatures, but most commonly hexgators, flipping them upside down with their stingers and piercing their softer bellies and injecting their venom.
Predation
While they are apex predators, they do indeed have rivals. The only creatures that have ever successfully hunted giant wasps are the Aar-Aori. The Aar-Aori commonly send parties to hunt down giant wasps, and have crafted armour and weapons out of the very exoskeleton the wasps wear.
