Flatfish Species in Yonderverse | World Anvil

Flatfish

Not to be confused with the other, horizontal flatfish, this flatfish lives in open oceans all over Greenerth and Ocearia. It is a common fish used for consumption with a range of races over the planets, as its large size can feed multiple people at once and they are very nutritious.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Flatfish have a vertical body, growing up to 3 metres long but only about 12cm wide. Their bodies share the same looks as lookdowns from Earth, except their tails and the back portion of its body are extremely long. They have silver shiny scales which reflect light, hiding them in completely open waters. They have purpleish scales as stripes on their bodies. Their eyes sit on the side of their heads, giving them good vision of their surroundings.

Genetics and Reproduction

Flatfish mate during Uribar, and lay eggs late Uribar and early Lonribar. They lay their eggs in the open waters, hoping they make their way with the waves towards shallower waters where it is safer.

Ecology and Habitats

Flatfish live in open waters. Due to its scales reflecting and bending light, the fish go completely unnoticed by predators as they swim through the oceans. Unfortunately for them, most people can see them.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Flatfish eat the many plankton that are found in the open waters of the oceans of Ocearia and Greenerth.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Flatfish are hunted by almost every race of underwater people that live in deeper waters. Their abundance, mass amounts of eggs and sluggish pace mean they are easy to catch, and since they're not used to predators spotting them they don't suspect people will kill them. Their meat is often eaten raw, but is also cooked on thermal vents and taste even better, but the hassle of cooking isn't worth it for most.

Existing in every ocean on Greenerth and Ocearia, they swim through the deep ocean waters in the pelagic zones.
