Michel de Laurent

Patron of Elfkind

Michel de Laurent was the founder and leader of the Peoples' Union, and one of the key figures in the Peoples' War. As a result, he is directly responsible for the ultimate formation of the Cervoyan Diarchy, the nation of Cervoya, and the Cérvic language.   He is widely considered to be the father of Elven cultural identity, and is an icon to Elfkind all over Wyrth.

Personal history

Michel was born to Bretonian Elves as Michael Lawrence. He was a child cast about in the waves of Elven childhood, actually outliving some of his peers before he had even made it to adulthood. This made him feel like an outsider in his homeland - one highly populated by Humans, Rus, and Chimera - seeing that his fellow Elves were pushed to the fringes as well.   As he grew, this overwhelming desire to see change swelled within him. By the time he was fully grown - age 74 - he had already witnessed the reign of two kings begin and end. He saw the short lives of the other races as a weakness; he believed that it made them short-sighted and more prone to creating the problems that he saw in his society. Poverty, crime, starvation, all were things he attributed to the short lives of his fellow Bretonians. Instead of being ruled by these others, he believed that Elves should take control of the country, as they would be better suited to ruling. Beyond that, he also believed that power should be spread across many lesser rulers with a Monarch to keep the peace between them all, but without taking power from them; the few should govern.   Over the next few decades - a short span for Michael and his fellows - a number of like-minded individuals began to form behind Michael, creating what they dubbed as the Peoples' Union. Their modus operandi was to go into towns and rally the common folk against the crown. Their primary targets were the Elves, but anyone who wanted to see change in the government was a welcome addition to the cause. In time, the Union grew to encompass thousands.   Once the Union was large enough, Michael - now calling himself Michel - crafted a language and culture for the new nation he sought to create. He also began to be more open about his belief that Elves were best suited to lead the nation, as their longevity gave them a better view of history; it made them more patient and willing to look at the big picture. While this did cause some to leave the Union, and drew a more concentrated gaze from outsiders, those that remained were all the more fired up. The Elven people felt oppressed by their failure to recover from exile. The Great Aberian Banishment was millennia ago, and yet they still felt like strangers in Olíga. In all those years, they had never had one of their kind sit on a throne. They felt it was time to change that.   This fervor eventually led to the Peoples' War, a revolution that led to the fall of the Bretonic Monarchy, and the rise of Cervoya. With a nation all their own, the Elves wasted no time consolidating power so that they wouldn't be quickly removed from the seat they had only just obtained. Despite many of his followers insisting, de Laurent refused the throne of Cervoya, instead granting it to Javier du Pont.   Michel then spent the rest of his life trying to spread the newly formed Repenian culture, using the recently created and widely adopted Common to spread his message to the world. Meanwhile, he was also introducing his own creation of Cérvic to further give the Elves the identity they craved.
