Totems

After the world was created, the gods and goddesses of the pantheon saw that it was good, and each sought to claim it for their own. This lead to a great conflict, where over 42 days and nights, they battled; toppling mountains, splitting seas, and destroying the world that they had built. On the 43rd day, they stopped and saw what they had done; realizing that there was no point fighting over a destroyed world, so they all agreed to never again step into the mortal plane.
To this day, Theologians don't agree which deity first bent the rules of this agreement by creating a totem; a creature created for the sole purpose of furthering their masters desire and goals. Today there's an indefinite number of totems across the world, using whatever power they can get to further their domains. Sometimes these totems align themselves with nations - not because they owe them any loyalty - but merely because nations can help them achieve their goals.
