Sparkpowder

Sparkpowder is a very important fuel in Wyrring, as it is the primary fuel for Kinetic Engines. It is a fine powder which can vary in colour depending upon its source, which has a slight magical aura to it. Sparkpowder is made from Faezress, which only requires minimal refinement. However, due to the difficulties of collecting faezress from the underdark, alternative methods for generating sparkpowder have been proposed.   Many scholars have noted that Kinetic Engines behave very similar to Arcane Batteries, whereby the magical properties of a fuel item are extracted to produce a continuous magical effect. Several early experiments were conducted on sparkpowder produced from ground up magical items, whose results suggested that it could provide a more concentrated power source, which would be beneficial to larger-scale kinetic engines. In general, one pound of grade 1 sparkpowder can run a small kinetic engine for approximately an hour, grade 2 for 2 hours, and grade 3 for 4. If grade 10 is used, it can power the same engine for approximately 512 hours, or over 21 days.   Because of this difference in efficiency, sparkpowder is typically rated on a 10-point scale, with 1 denoting the weakest efficiency, and 10 the highest. To date, the highest grade of sparkpowder which has been produced has been a 5, and all higher scales are purely theoretical. Most sparkpowder currently available to the public has a grade of 1 or 2, however, a limited number of groups, such as The Silver Legion have access to grade 3.  As well, although grade 10 is believed to be possible, The Grand College has issued a sweeping ban on its production, and those who seek to find a way to create it would be risking the institution's wrath.   The rise in sparkpowder has also caused an increase in popularity of Arcane Indexing. Previously a niche skill, the exploration for higher quantities and grades of sparkpowder has created a new wave of practitioners.
