Late Bonnet

Late Bonnets are a type of mushroom which only grow in the Lowerdark, which have been used for centuries for skincare.   These mushrooms are very large, with diameters typically over 1 m, with next to no stalks. Their skin is typically a dark gray - making them nearly indistinguishable from nearby stones - while their gills are a very bright green.   These mushrooms have been traditionally used by drow women for skin care. When boiled into a tea, Late Bonnets are known to prevent pimples and other blemishes. As such, this tea has become a staple meal for many of The Aristoi, in conjunction with more traditional make-ups and glamours. This tea has been described as "incredibly bitter", which helps the tea serve as one of the first ways that drow women learn to hide their emotions.   The Lowerdark provides the ideal growing conditions for this mushroom, which prefers hot, humid climates. As well, it is believed that the Lowerdark must also provide some currently unknown nutrient, as there have been many failed attempts of cultivating this mushroom on both the surface and higher levels of the underdark.   Many Late Bonnets currently in distribution are grown in Blingdenstone, which has profited greatly from the demand. However, growing areas in the city are fairly limited, and the creation of farms outside the protective city walls is typically met with violence and pillaging from the monsters which call the Lowerdark home. Because of this, many of the deep gnomes make expeditions out into the surrounding areas to forage for these mushrooms. Despite the inherent danger with this job, many of these foragers make several trips a month, ranging from day trips to several weeks long.

I love that this is one way they learn to hide emotions! Nice.
