Honeyback

Honeybacks - also known as "Mel Domi" or "Honey houses" - are a species of large tortoises found throughout Estalia, Ostrangard, and Sylvia. As a survival trait against predators, their shells evolved to a honeycomb pattern, allowing them substantial protection without weighing them down. These honeycomb structures are extremely popular amongst various species of bees and wasps, with many setting up hives on the tortoises' backs. The hives themselves do not bother the tortoise, and the territorial nature of the insects prevents any, more bothersome, creature from taking nest in its shell.
These creatures are fairly widespread, and serve as important pollinators. In Sylvia they are protected, and those who hunt them risk ostracization. In Estalia, it is rare but not unheard of, for farmers to keep their own Honeybacks, both to pollinate their crops and to grow honey from. Commercial honeybacks are typically outfitted with a spigot, which has been specially crafted to fit within the maze of their shells.
