Artiyerit (Prince) Ekil Ioro Tliwikai

Personal history
Ekil was born during Keyrit's economic and military ascension. His father the king believed that Ekil would learn better among the people than huddled up in the royal palace. It wasn't a Keyrityi tradition, but prior kings had done the same. To this end, Ekil was taught and shown the harshness of life from the age of five. The king told seven-year-old Ekil that, regardless of the king's wishes, Ekil could choose if and when he would leave the palace. Even with love for his family, Ekil left the house that very night to prove his worth. He offered his services as an apprentice to a rope-maker and used what wages he earned to learn at a private institution. Neither his teacher nor his master learned of his true identity, and instead his master sold him off to the Keyrit military as part of a bulk sale.
Education
The Keyrit military found it fit to install Ekil into the navy, primarily due to his prior experience as a rope-maker. Ekil was trained to fight with the sword and the axe as a kal'takyi of the navy. He made it a point to stay out of the limelight, both in the good ways and in the bad ways. The officer that commanded him was too low on the totem pole to recognize him, but the captains and admirals a few rungs higher might notice him and give him special attention, defeating the whole purpose of his youth as a commoner. Even so, Ekil consistently scored in the top quartile among his colleagues, both with regards to academics and with regards to combat. Away from the prying eyes of his officers, he tutored and trained the lower-performing cadets to reach his level. His commanding officer recognized Ekil's consistent skill and apparent (albeit unproven) leadership and preferred it greatly to the glory-seeking champions who occasionally reached first and second place. To Ekil's surprise, he was the first to be given an assignment: a diplomatic mission to Tuhra.
Employment
The crew of the Raiwerai had no knowledge of Ekil's royalty, but the ambassador could identify him on sight. The diplomat never called Ekil out in the open but conversed with him in secret, catching up on Ekil's childhood and instructing him on matters of state. His education fully completed, Ekil was ready to become king just before the Raiwerai was intercepted by the Wlitowan Navy during a night raid. Ekil's calm command kept the ship afloat as the Wlitowan Navy flung ballistics from afar. The attackers were forced to close the distance and board the Raiwerai. The diplomat personally helped Ekil off the ship so that he could escape to shore. Ekil was the only one who wasn't captured, but his actions saved the crew of the Raiwerai from almost certain death.
He didn't leave unscathed, though; the cold waters gave him a nasty illness. He was nursed to health by the very princess of Wlitowa, of all people. In turn, Ekil taught her everything he had learned from his studies, as if she was a recruit back at the academy. The two fell in love and would later marry, ending the Keyrit-Wlitowan rivalry.
