The Hollow

Purpose / Function

The Hollow is the area outside of The Den. The Hollow adds additional protection to the privacy of the Den. Outside of the Hollow is the disorienting barrier that protects lycanthropes or other therianthropes from curious humans.

Design

While not quite a room, the Hollow is considered to be the circular clearing outside the Den and a few meters of woods from there, where the barrier starts. The forest of the outer part of the Hollow are made of mostly oak and maple trees, and large branches weave together to make a thick sky covering. A hole has been burned in the middle of the clearing to allow moonlight to shine through and to allow rituals and practices involving the moon to take place safely in private.

Entries

The opening of the mineshaft of the Den is on the west side of the Hollow. On the three other sides, there is mostly open, dense forest. Nothing really blocks much, besides the tall, wide hill on the side of the Den. The open sides are mostly blocked from thick, weaved branches. The safest openings are in the cardinal directions; there are three openings in the trees in the north, east, and south while the west leads to the Den.

Sensory & Appearance

The temperature and lighting of the Hollow depends on the weather and time of day, due to it being outside. It is usually warmer and brighter near the west side.
When one walks near, they may smell the sweet forest scents or the bittersweet stench of burning flesh, if a moon ritual is taking place under a full moon. More often than not, the smell of smoke from torches or fire usually hangs in the air, due to the canopy.
The Hollow is usually fairly shady, with dappled light. This is also due to the canopy. During the night, however, moonlight shines through the hole and lands on the Den, and slowly moves to the center during moon high, and leaves while shining on the east side.
Due to the outer edge of the Hollow being a wooded area, one may hear various birds chirping and the chattering of squirrels and chipmunks.

Denizens

Lycanthropes primarily use this space, considering the Hollow surrounds the outside of the main base of one of the larger groups of lycanthropes. Other therianthropes are welcome, but they usually stick with others of their kind.

Contents & Furnishings

There are a few tables and crates filled with excess storage and other objects and furnishings that are not in use in the Den, but are too big to be left there. An altar can always be found in the center of the Hollow, under the "Moon Hole", for rituals. There are also always training dummies for combat practice.

Special Properties

The outside of the Hollow has a disorientation barrier, which deters curious humans and frustrates vampires, who are the enemies of therianthropes.
During a full moon, a phenomena occurs in the Hollow. The Honey Moon Effect is described in more detail in its own article.
