Dellin the Silver's On the Origins of the Animus

The following is an excerpt from the writings of one Dellin the Silver, a gnome wizard hailing from the city of Silversea. Renown for his understanding of magic and his many writings on the subject, Dellin's theories on the nature of the Animus are considered some of the most esteemed contributions to the literature surrounding the study of the Animus.

On the Origins of the Animus

...for this reason, no recorded histories contain valid information on the origins of the Animus. Each great empire, Dominion, city or wandering tribe have their own ideas, their own origins, and they are all shrouded in the fogs of myth-making and nationalism. What purpose does it serve to, say, consider the theory of origin of the Animus presented by the wandering Elten tribes of the Tribal Lands of Volkyr, when their myth of great wizards of millennia past stirring the Animus to life in one of their fantastic cauldrons of creation serves only to solidify the Great Wizard's grasp on the levers of control within their own tribe, and when their creation myth, such as it is, bears no captivating or otherwise convincing evidence that would lend credence to their claims. Indeed, it is as such for many, if not all of the cultural myths of Animus creation that I have encountered during the course of my many travails across this great Wonder.

I have therefore endeavored, through much combined research and investigation of ruined temples, ancient forests, great artifacts of antiquity, withered tomes, and indeed through grave sites and mausoleums of times long forgotten by those living today, to understand the creation of the Animus. Having considered this notion for a lifetime and combing sources that span thousands of lifetimes, I have come to the irrefutable conclusion that, whatever source of creation there may be for the Animus there may be, that source is unavailable to us who reside on this great World of Wonder. That which created the Animus, if it exists in any fashion, certainly does not exist in any fashion on the World of Wonder. I find it better and more fitting to consider the idea of creation of the Animus resolved itself, insofaras there is nothing, no being, entity, or cosmic or godly force which can claim to be the creator of the Animus. The Animus, in the form and fashion we understand it to exist in this moment, has always existed, and while certainly there was a time when the World of Wonder existed without the Animus, a time so long ago it may as well be a different world entirely, I can say with the assured certainty of a learned man who has exhausted all other possibilities, that the Animus was not created in or on the World of Wonder, but rather that the Animus arrived to the World of Wonder, many, many millennia ago.   What is notable about this arrival is that it coincided with great and wondrous events found on every continent. The bursting to life of the great volcano that stands as the centerpiece of the continent of Volkyr; the growth and flourishing of the Elden Tree; the splitting of that massive canyon on the continent of Pac; the ever churning storm of Tempessi; the plateaus and super river of Isari; even the Icy Isles have old tomes that right of a time before the continent was blanketed in cold, suggesting a separate look and terrain for the continent entirely. Each of these continent defining forces can be traced back to the arrival of the Animus. This, it must be said, gifts the prospective researcher of history of the World of Wonder itself an excellent defining line to separate different ages of the Wonder: prior to the arrival of the Animus, and post.   This, of course, does not answer the question of the creation of the Animus, and indeed that question has been discovered to be fruitless in the context of understanding the Animus. I know not, and have no opinion on, what, if anything at all, created the Animus. Such a question is left to others, whose minds prefer an impossible hypothetical to consider over theories that are able to be properly research and, in time, properly understood. What I can answer with certainty is when the Animus arrived on the World of Wonder; it coincides with the bursting of a volcano, the violent twirl of winds in a superstorm, and so on. Count backwards from the year, as defined by each continent in their respective dating systems(each system based entirely on the beginning, or activation, of their respective wonders), and when you arrive at 0, you arrive at the closest estimated time known for when the Animus arrived in the World of Wonder...
