Hyarisis

Causes

This condition occurs when a being ingests toxic levels of the narille plant's leaves. Onset of the condition in this case can take up to several hours, or however long it takes for the relevant species to digest the plant matter and release sufficient quantities of juices into the body. Higher intake of leaves will cause faster onset.
It can also be caused by direct injection of concentrated narille leaf extract into the bloodstream. In this case, symptoms can begin within moments, reaching its peak within just a few minutes.

• Difficulty breathing
• Reduced heart-rate
• Coma
• Drop in body temperature
• Nightmares
• (Rarely) Death

Treatment

While there is no way to directly cure this condition, there are some steps that can be taken to increase the patient's chances of survival until the toxins are naturally flushed out of their system.

1. Wet cloths are the most common treatment. Placing one soaked in cold water on the forehead is thought to ease nightmares caused by the initial fever. Additionally, it is thought to be better to wipe down the body with cold cloths rather than warm like one would usually do.
2. Plenty of fresh water. This is both to replace fluids the body is losing through sweat and to encourage the natural flushing out of narille toxins from the body.
3. Lying on the side. By placing the patient on their side, it reduces the amount of weight their muscles have to move in order for them to breathe. This can be very important as lack of oxygen to the muscles can cause breathing to cease altogether in some patients.
4. In cases where the cause is excessive narille ingestion, induction of vomiting is the most immediate treatment in order to mitigate the severity of symptoms as soon as possible.

The most important aspect of caring for someone suffering from hyarisis is to constantly monitor their condition. Especially in those with pre-existing conditions, the comatose state can easily come very near death, particularly if something obstructs the airway at any point.

Affected Groups

Due to the region that narille grows in, hyarisis typically only affects elves. Those of a very young age are prone to overdosing themselves, whether through simple curiosity or intentional experimentation. Rarely, humans can also experience this condition, due to some human groups experimenting with narille in order to weaponize it. Only those that ingest large quantities of narille leaf or who have concentrated extract of narille injected into their bloodstreams.
