Camarilla
The Camarilla is the most organized of the vampiric sects, an elite club that favors tradition and control of the mortal populace from behind the scenes. Across their domains, they enforce six major Traditions, chief among them being the Masquerade. All clans have an individual presence in the Ivory Tower, though a select group of pillar clans make up the core of its membership. Once the Camarilla welcomed all Kindred who obeyed its laws, but recent events have caused the leadership to adopt more exclusive membership rules. No Anarchs, Caitiff, or thin-blooded vampires are allowed to exist within the sect.
In addition to preventing the growing mortals masses from discovering the existence of vampires, the Camarilla aims to maintain the status quo of Kindred society; as such, much of its structure and traditions mirror that of Cainite society in feudal Europe in the Dark Ages, and places it at odds with the agenda of the Sabbat and Anarchs, both of whom seek to overthrow archaic Kindred society.
Despite being the oldest ruling Kindred body, New York City has spent very little of its life as a Camarilla city. After the stock market crashed in 1929, Ventrue leader Michaela managed to claw out her own section of the city, particularly in the borough of Manhattan. Michaela proclaimed herself Prince of Manhattan (despite its Sabbat occupation since the 1600s) in 1980. After siring a brood of fledglings that would help her defend her claim, Michaela was murdered in 1998 during a supposed "peace talk" meeting with the Sabbat.
In 1999, during a cleverly played campaign known as the Battle of New York , a coalition of Camarilla, Anarchs and Unbound drove the Sabbat out of New York in a battle that lasted less than a week. A Nosferatu, Calebros, reigned over the city pro tempore while the Camarilla formerly led by Michaela bickered about who their new Prince would be. In the end, Hellene Panhard, Childe of Michaela, was named Prince of the city, though her reign ended in 2012.
During a Second Inquisition attack known only as Operation Spotlight in 2010, Panhard and the Anarch Baron "Boss" Callihan had a less than professional relationship, and both leaked the location of certain "undesirables" to the Inquisition, including low ranking Anarch, Unbound and Camarilla Kindred in an effort to silence their opposition. When this was uncovered by an Anarch coterie, a schism was created within the city. In the wake of the anti-Camarilla sentiments following the Conclave of Prague, a number of Anarch sympathizers within the Camarilla jumped ship, tired of watching the elders throw fledglings and neonates to the wolves. The Anarchs and their allies revolted, forcing Callihan and Panhard to meet Final Death as well as forcing the Camarilla to retreat from the city.
However, recently the Camarilla has set its sights on the Big Apple again, establishing an Elysium on the executive floor of the Armitage Hotel. While their plan has not been made apparent yet, it is very likely that they intend to seize contol of the city from their Anarch counterparts and impose the rule of the Traditions once more.
