Orst Aerie is a town on the Tormvald Plateau of the Atalassian island of Talanas. It was at its height in influence and wealth at the beginning of the Sixth or Current Age of Azocar. Unfortunately, the War of the Night King has exacted a heavy toll on Orst Aerie and a great effort will be needed for the town to recover.

Districts

Old Orst

West of the Orst River and southwest of the Meryl's run is the oldest part of Orst Aerie, known simply as Old Orst. This western banks of the two waterways where they met was where the earliest settlement that eventually would give rise to the town. As the town grew, the oldest part of it became the haven for the less fortunate and not as well-to-do residents there. Old Orst was fortunate in that it was spared any damage or destruction during the War of the Night King so it rose to increased promise after that conflict.   There were several locales of import drew attention to Old Orst. The Copper Dasher was a well-known tavern that was frequented by locals and visitors alike. The indoor gathering of merchants' stalls and shops known simply as the Market House was here as well. Also, the the ruins of the original keep on the river mound were part of the district.   The primary thoroughfare in this part of town is the Meryl Road, which enters Orst Aerie through the Meryl Gate. It bisects the upper portion of Old Orst as it continues south until it reaches the Westriver March. There it turns west towards the Southern Gate, where it exits down and continues its overland journey to Thryreev.

New Orst

The area across from the old keep and south, along the eastern bank of the Orst River, came to be known as New Orst. As was commonplace, the wealthier class were given to putting some obstruction between their residences and themselves and the poor nearby. In Orst Aerie, that obstruction was the river. Like in Old Orst across the river, the upscale buildings of New Orst escaped damage during the War of the Night King.   Following the War, the places of commerce that dotted the riverside in New Orst were converted to house those who were displaced by the fighting and damage. It would be some time before the commercial interests that were here before would return.   Orst Ven, which continues its route from Upper Orst, is the primary roadway in New Orst. It intersects with the Eastriver March and continues south all the way to and through the New Gate.

The Aerie

The northern point of land that lay between the confluence of the two rivers was known as the Aerie. For a long period of the settlement's history, it was sparsely inhabited. However, when the old keep fell into disrepair, the governor of the time struck an accord with the few residences in the secluded areas around the rocky hill that overlooked the waters. In exchange for including the area in the fortified walls that were planned for the whole town, the governor was bequeathed the entirety of the mound. Here was built Castle Aerie.   Castle Aerie was a fortification that actually housed several structures, including the town's barracks and a general use temple. Also at the site were the governor's manor, which was part of the main fortress, and a secondary hall that housed the governing apparatus of the town. Unfortunately, all of these structures were and many of the fine homes between the hill and town wall, and even the wall itself were severely damaged during the War of the Night King and fell out of use for a time.

Upper Orst

The northern half of the portion of Orst Aerie east of the Orst River is known as Upper Orst. This is the part of the town that was most severely damaged during the War of the Night King. While a scattering of structures remained standing after the fighting was done, the vast majority were severely damaged or completely destroyed. This includes all of the outer wall in this part of the town.   The Orst Ven roadway was the first feature in Upper Orst to be restored after the War of the Night King.

History

War of the Night King

Orst Aerie was fortunate for much of the War of the Night King and escaped any fighting or damage. However, this good luck ran out in the penultimate year of fighting.   During much of CA 20, the Army of the Dwarven Nations chased the remnants of the Esthren People's Army south across the eastern third of Talanas, all the way from the foot of the Spine to the edges of the Tormvald. In the fall, it trapped the dwarves trapped the Esthreners between their force and the Central Barrier. Desperate to survive, the EPA marched on Orst Aerie and occupied the border town.   At first, the dwarven army was reticent to spread the fighting where it had not been yet but, as winter approached, they feared they would lose an opportunity. They marched on the occupied and a catastrophic battle followed. Eventually, the occupiers were forced to flee into the hills but they left much destruction behind. The dwarves offered no solace after the fact, but instead headed north closer to their homelands to put down for the imminent winter.

Geography

Orst Aerie sits on the confluence of two waterways; the Meryl's Run and the much larger and voluminous Orst River. The town was first settled south of the Meryl and west of the Orst but it eventually grew to occupy land on all three land masses. The area where the rivers meet is generally flat but a rocky hill dominates the northern peninsula between the Orst and the Meryl.
