Neldath University

This prestigious institution is housed in several small buildings with one central administration building. The largest buildings on campus lie near the Processional; these are Neldath Hall (the administration building), Timber Hall (where most classrooms are), College Hall (holding faculty offices and meeting rooms), the Grand Library (the largest building on campus), and the Hall of the Dean (containing classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, and storerooms). The Hall of the Dean is one of the oldest buildings, with a dining hall below ground. Smaller buildings are scattered along the northern curve of University Street. An observatory stands to the west, outside of the city. Many of the buildings are still in their original form, but Neldath Hall has recently been rebuilt concurrent with the dedication of the University. It now features a white marble atrium that shines with the midday sun thanks to the many windows along the walls and ceiling. A grand fountain adorns the middle of the atrium. This was a gift to the University from dwarven craftsmen of Angbadur.   The granite facade of the Great Library, with its columns, stairs, and statues, is far grander than the rest of the building, which is not ornate. Many claim this is the largest repository of books and scrolls in Brineven, and this is likely true. The Great Library has collected volumes and papers on nearly every topic imaginable, though evaluating this wealth of knowledge for its veracity is a challenge for anyone. The Great Library is open every day from dawn to dusk unless the staff is ill. There is no admission fee. Magical lights are hung throughout the building, remaining lit at all hours.   The students of Neldath are expected to attend classes in the formal gray robes of Neldath. Combined with the multi-colored robes of Archewood Hall (the Prismatic Order), the streets of Neldath Hill are always awash with robed students running to their next class or assignment.

Structure

The University is run by the Chancellor, Vilareen Nimrale (human male), who is in direct communication with the Grand Duke. The Vice Chancellor, Rendril Jelthar (human male) is generally the person who communicates the Chancellor's directives to the staff. In the case that the Chancellor is away or unable to fulfill their duties, the Vice Chancellor steps in to fill the void.   Reporting to the Chancellor is the Dean of Students, Gillian McFinan (human female), who is responsible for the student body. The Dean of students is in charge of registrations and assignments of students, as well as any disciplinary needs of the university.   Also reporting to the Chancellor, and the Grand Duke, is the Minister of Education, Helmir Vorgan (alfar male). While a part of Neldath University, the Minister of Education oversees the tutors and teachers who educate the population, not only of Brineven City, but the entire Grand Duchy. This post was originally the Dean of Education, but previous monarchs worked with Neldath College (at that time) to create a system of basic education throughout the kingdom (now a grand duchy). Queen Rhonwen of the Northern Kingdom of Arvanor is now working to duplicate this system throughout the greater kingdom.   There are seven departments in Neldath, each overseen by a Dean of Studies. The seven departments are listed below, with information about the departments themselves.

Arts

The Arts Department includes Arvanoran Literature, Oratory, Visual Arts such as painting and sculpture, and Music. It is headed by Dean Phandrun Willem (alfar male).

History

The History Department has courses on Arvanoran History, but has researchers who delve into the history of Caldonia and Arith itself. It focuses on history, but also geography. It includes courses on mythology and folklore. Dean Talma Medarm (human female) is a Brin patriot through and through, and is skeptical of the New Kingdom of Northern Arvanor.

Mathematics

The mathematics department is focused not only on pure mathematics, but accounting, economics, and finance. For Dean Zarud Fylin (human male), numbers rule all, and mathematics is the path to greater understanding.

Natural Studies

Natural Studies is a large department, focused on the workings of the natural world. The study of animals, plants, the elements, and natural cycles is just part of the courses the department offers. Other courses include alchemy, astronomy, and astrology. Dean Nelzara Berik (gnome female) is known for her frequent and sometimes dangerous field studies, where students get "up close and personal" with the natural environs near Brineven City.

Healing

The department of healing focuses on the humanoid body and its systems. Courses include healing, medicine, herbalism, disease, and poisons, Dean Lamintar Delgaun (human male) is fascinated with the body. While he respects "faith healing" (clerical powers), he strives to understand the body systems enough that divine magic wouldn't be needed to cure wounds and disease.

Engineering

The engineering department focuses on building things, from clockworks to buildings. Their courses on architecture are in high demand. Clockworks are less of a draw for students, but a small minority of students are fascinated by them. Dean Esvena Kilgand (dwarf female) is the consummate inventor, always showing new devices to her students for them to pull apart and understand.

Magical Studies

The department of Magical Studies is unlike the other departments. Students who show a talent in, and are interested in pursuing magical studies are interviewed and assessed for their aptitude. Students who show the promise of divine magic are transferred to local churches as acolytes. Students of the arcane are tested and vetted and offered choices. Those who wish to join an arcane organization are offered acceptance to the Prismatic Order of Archewood Hall or the Arcanum of Maddaford College. Those who don't want to commit to either arcane organization are mentored to one of the mages of Neldath College, who will see to their arcane education. Dean Jhera Tarath (elf female) has been doing this for as long as anyone in the university remembers, and is very good at determining what is best for the individual student.
