While en route to the diner they were attacked by hostiles acting under the influence of the plant entity, including mind-controlled motorists and stalkers.

At the diner the family faced many defenders of the node, including plant proxies and motorists. The family, wearing protective gear and no longer under the influence of the plant, saw the diner in its true form, as a building infested with prehensile, thorny vines.
