Vyzzyg Character in World After Tiamat | World Anvil

Vyzzyg

Copper dragon. One of the leading scholars in the world, specializing in history. They live(d) in the famous Mornaug library before it was destroyed by Tiamat.

  • The party encountered them again in Rokus McCune's house. Rokus found them alone, unconscious, and missing an arm in the woods. He patched up the few scratches he found on them, but the missing arm was already healed. Despite Rokus's best efforts, he could not wake Vyzzyg up, so he resorted to reading their journal to find out who they were (and is embarrassed about it).

  •
  • The party discovered that Vyzzyg was cursed, which is why they wouldn't wake up, but Vyzzyg's last memory is of losing their arm trying to defend the Mornaug library and then teleporting away using a teleport scroll. They don't know how or why they were cursed.

    Personal history

Vyzzyg was born and raised in Mornaug, which is a bit unusual given their distinct disdain for gods, including Bahamut. When they were growing up, their thirst for answers and highly active mind led them to quickly see holes in the teachings of Bahamut. Vyzzyg quickly came to the conclusion that Bahamut didn't actually care all that much about his creations and, after studying more history, came to the same conclusion about all gods. Luckily, Mornaug didn't discriminate against people with different religions from them, but Vyzzyg's attitude did lead to many frustrated clerics who had the misfortune to have Vyzzyg in their sunday school class.   Vyzzyg always had a deep love of books and their parents indulged this, including taking Vyzzyg to other large libraries in Faerun. When Vyzzyg was 52, they decided to go traveling for a while (a common decision among dragons born and raised in Mornaug). They didn't mind the large number of strangers they encountered on their travels, but people tended to want to discuss meaningless topics that only exhausted Vyzzyg. Their happiest time was studying at Elderlight Academy and then the Neverwinter School of Magic.    Vyzzyg quickly developed a reputation as an excellent scholar and published a number of books and articles. Where ordinary folks had found them a bit overwhelming and intense, academics loved them.   But eventually, Vyzzyg's introvert nature won out and when they turned 100 they decided to return to Mornaug and take up a post as its permanent librarian. Vyzzyg still published books and articles and kept in touch with their academic friends, but they almost never left the library. They were allowed to build themselves a room to live in and saw no reason to go searching for anything else.   When Tiamat was resurrected, everyone in Mornaug knew that she would head there first. After all, Mornaug was dedicated to Tiamat's most hated enemy and the god who ultimately imprisoned her for more than 2000 years. In addition, the city has the largest concentration of metallic dragons in the world. The majority of dragons evacuated immediately and only a handful of devout remained behind, determined to go down with the ship. Vyzzyg also stayed behind, not out of loyalty to Bahamut, but out of a desire to save as many books as possible.    They hoped that they could hold protection magic over at least some of the books and Tiamat wouldn't notice them. This ultimately didn't happen. Tiamat's fury was unimaginably intense and it was one of the few efforts she undertook herself. Everything was collapsing, chromatic dragons were attacking everything that moved, and Vyzzyg was spotted fairly quickly. They tried to battle with several chromatic dragons at once, but lost their arm and ultimately used a teleport scroll to leave. Their thought was that they could possibly go to Rockport and at least help to protect the dragon masks there, but the teleport scroll didn't have nearly that range.   However, something went terribly wrong and Vyzzyg ended up unconscious and cursed hundreds of miles from where he started.

    Gender Identity

Non-binary, close to agender. Even setting aside being a shapeshifter, Vyzzyg has never felt a strong connection to either male or female gender identities and doesn't feel like they're very important.

    Education

Vyzzyg has multiple graduate degrees in history, sociology, divine studies, physics, and planar physics from both Elderlight Academy and the Neverwinter School of Magic. Most of these were obtained during the 50-odd years Vyzzyg was traveling, but they also were awarded several honorary degrees after they settled back in Mornaug.

    Mental Trauma

Vyzzyg saw a number of their friends die and was separated from many more. Pretty much everything and everyone they cared about was in Mornaug and they feel isolated and adrift now that the city is destroyed. They also have some survivor's guilt, feeling like they should have stayed and fought to the end rather than fleeing after they lost their arm.
