Cloud Deer Species in Wolf Mania | World Anvil

Cloud Deer

Cloud deer are a subspecies of deer with coats made completely from clouds, or so they say. Their eyes are known to range in various shades of blue or brown, and their white fur is as soft as clouds, though rumors are speculated to have started about their coats descending from sheep. While they look like deer, around their torso, stomach, and back is fluffy, cloud-like fur.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Cloud deer are quadrupedal ruminant mammals. They can easily be defined by their white coats and blue or brown eyes. They have antlers that grow on both male and female cloud deer. However, the males are the only ones who lose their antlers during winter, while females lose theirs in summer. Fauns are typically born with black spots on the sides that fade away as they grow into adolescence.

Ecology and Habitats

Cloud deer are known to like high, elevated places and search for high points to call their den. They rarely venture out and stick to their herd. The buck of the herd mates with as many of the does as he can, but only when there is enough food to spare.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They love to eat bark and graze on grass, berries, or leaves off of silver-leafed bushes. Another floating rumor is that cloud deer eat small rodents if they're hungry enough and their normal diet is running scarce.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Cloud deer are known for their exotic meat, which makes one feel like they are floating on air. A popular cloud deer dish was made by Makoto Kou. The dish is named Poached Cloud Deer and Curry Buns.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Cloud deer can only be found on Ethor Island, deep within the forest, and kept away from civiliation. The forest of Ethor Island is their main home and remains unpopulated by humanoids. The closest civilization on the islands is to the south, and the town is of average size. The people never enter the forest and only lure their prey out to them.

I love the mix of storytelling and fact-explaining, for lack of a better word (my brain is a little tired from reading all the articles I've read today). It starts with a great bit of storytelling for a hook, gets into some interesting encyclopedia-type stuff in the middle, and wraps with a bit more storytelling near the very end. Nicely done!
