The Burrows

A Quiet Spot

Deep in the Sildrak Forest lies a small, secluded glade. In its centre sits a large tree stump, which is surrounded by grass and wildflowers, and is open to the sky above. Towards the edges, the ground becomes more uneven, with small hillocks, overgrown branches and exposed roots, and the light filters down through the leaves above. At a passing glance it would appear as any other quiet forest glade, but a closer inspection would reveal a much different story, for this glade is home to the Mousefolk.   The entire glade has been transformed into a town by the industrious Mousefolk, and is home to nearly two hundred of the tiny folk. Rotten logs, earthy mounds, tree roots, hollow stumps are all perfect places to be repurposed into homes, workshops and stores, and the Mousefolk have done just that.

Nature's Bounty

Much of what the townsfolk eat grows naturally in the surrounding woodland, though they make sure their foraging never depletes an area, they always leave enough behind to ensure future harvests. If they find a particularly good patch of something tasty they will actively tend to it to ensure a more plentiful harvest.   The Mousefolk also cultivate patches of mushrooms and other fungi, as well as small gardens of rare or hard to find herbs and edible flowers. There is also a particular grub that they are rather fond of, which lives in rotted wood, that they have also learned to farm. The pride of the town however, is the patch of wild baby potatoes and carrots that they manage to maintain.

Governance

The town is a close knit community, where everyone knows eachother and most folk know what needs to be done to keep the town running smoothly. However, they also like to know that there is someone capable in charge, who knows what to do in the event of an emergency or something. For this they have the Headmouse and the Town Council.   The council is comprised of five of the wisest and most experienced mousefolk in the town, which usually makes them quite old, but not always. The Headmouse is elected by the whole town, and is usually someone who is well respected, quick minded and good at making decisions.

Water

The Mousefolk get most of their water from collected rainfall, they have devised a clever system of leaves and hollowed stalks that allows them to channel the rain water to where they want it. This system along with several well dug channels also helps keep their homes from flooding during severe rain, though sometimes even that is not enough.   They have dug out two large basins which they have lined with stone and keep filled with water at all times. One is quite deep and narrow, which they keep covered, this is used as a resevoir during times of no rain. The other is shallower and wider and is used for recreational purposes, such as keeping cool in the summer and skating in the winter.
