Exubia Species in Wilde Blue | World Anvil

Exubia

A million unseen eyes

Keep an eye out. You never know who's watching.

Most birds are a rarity in the modern world. The predatory selxus and accipeter are driven off by the clamor that hangs around most islands like a tattered cloth, and their prey is not used to searching for food away from the forests that are their usual habitat. However, the exubia is not most birds. Instead, they are so common that the average folk simply ignores their presence.

Intelligent Pest

Despite being seen as a common pest, the exubia has a startling capacity for intelligence. They can remember faces, and prioritize people who give them food over those that treat them with harshness. The most intelligent form fairly large groups with a distinct social heirarchy. It is unclear what benefit the birds at the top of the heirarchy provide to those below, but the fact remains that these birds end up provided for by their subordinates.

Urban Fowl

Like most non-predatory birds, the exubia is a scavenger. In their new habitat of the cities of the Blue, that mostly involves stealing food from anyone who leaves it alone for even a moment. Their mottled grey feathers blend in with the stone and concrete that makes up the majority of the modern world.

Stowaways

Exubia do not have the capacity to travel across the vast distances between islands. Originally, they were only native to the island of Ilysium, but they have managed to spread to most every island in the Blue, simply by catching a ride on the skyships that travel to and fro.

It is honestly a little surprising to me how smart they are. I feed the ones near me, and they sometimes bring me coins in return, almost as if they know that people use them to trade for food.
