Adar

A tiny farming settlement

Adar may be an unnoticeable speck to well, everyone, but it's our home.
— Elucio Nabor, village elder

The Island

A small but fertile asteroid, close to Ilysium but only colonized late in the Colonial Era due its size.

Geography

Adar is a mostly flat island, with some small hills and ponds that gather the rainwater after a storm. Mostly the island is covered in crops, with only farmhouses and a docks breaking up the fields of grains, vegetables, and fruits.

Flora and Fauna

Not much original flora or any fauna remain, having been pushed off by the colonists that work the lands. Instead, the island is covered with crops, and the only living things that are not colonists are the pests that they brought with them.

Natural Resources

While the produce that Adar grows could be counted, it is more correct to say that the only natural resource of Adar is the soil. Lush, and full of nutrients, like most in the Dominion of Natura, it is the cause of Adar's survival despite its small size.

The Village

Centered around the docks, Adar is a tiny town focused entirely on growing food for the Empire. Fear of running dry is often present, as the island is not big enough to support the kind of farming required for the town to survive. Earthblood and Waterblood enrich the soil and water the crops, respectively, maintaining a delicate balance that often results in little being left for the residents of Adar.

Demographic

Too poor for slaves, the town is entirely made of Imperial Colonists. Over half of the population have some sort of training in either Earthblood or Waterblood sorcery, which is high for a small settlement but not unheard of.

Government

Adar is ostensibly owned by a Noble named Tycho Maius of House Putrace. However, there is little for an elite such as him to do in such a tiny town, and so he picks a representative, known as a reeve, to carry out his will. Maius has only visited Adar two or three times in the last five years, and has very little interest in the day-to-day workings of running a colony. The reeve often does very little, simply allocating funds for the greatest profit for Maius. This often brings her into conflict with the elders. The elders are a selection of people who represent the various families that live on Adar, and are only often old because they can no longer work the fields. They act in Adar's best interests, or so they claim, and when they all agree have enough power that the reeve must bend to their collective will. This only happens in times of strife, however. Finally, when it comes to matters of law, there is a registered magistrate in town. Issues are rarely taken to that point, as most townspeople prefer to settle things themselves. Disagreements rarely lead to violence, and bystanders quickly handle it when it does get messy, so there is no need for a police force of any kind.

Controlling Houses

Only House Putrace has any active interest in Adar. However, House Avisong, until recently, has kept up a presence on many colonies to curtail House Putrace's influence, including Adar. House Tenevine has a presence on Salva, which is close enough to Adar that an active force is not needed, and House Wyrmsange employs the local magistrate.

History

Founded in 1896, Adar was heading quickly for slave colony status. There was too little land, too few nutrients in the fertile soil, to sustain continued farming for more than a single generation. However, due to its close proximity to Ilysium, and its aforementioned small size, Adar was the perfect testing ground for new Earthblood technologies. The newly-discovered sorcery was used to rejuvenate the soil and keep the colony from drying up fully. However, it teetered on the edge of collapsing for several more generations until finally exports were eased in the early Industial-Sorcery Age. Until then, Adar has been largely untouched by other occurrings the Blue, from the Glesseal-Imperial War to the Trade Union Revolutionary War. Most recently, Adar's ownership passed from Acilia Maius to her son, Tycho.
