Atlantis Medical Foundation

"I like working for the Foundation. They pay well if I can get results, and there's a lot of repeat business. Never had an employer be so unlucky in my favor."
— Francis Delacourt, Mercenary
The Atlantis Medical Foundation exists primarily to safeguard information of medical procedures and equipment, though they have a reputation for many other acts. While it hasn't been proven, it is believed the Foundation hires mercenaries to "acquire" information or abduct experts to interrogate for information. Angelo Harding, the current Director of the Foundation denies these allegations strenuously, citing a lack of evidence as reasons to dismiss charges. Most of the more heinous cases have been dismissed, while the Foundation has settled other cases outside of court for large amounts of C-Bills.

Ever since the founding of the company, information on the Foundation is simultaneously easy to find and hard to acquire. Most information available to the public is about the attempts at recovering and safeguarding knowledge, along with high-profile events such as their failed attempt to purchase Baker Pharmaceuticals' medication formulas. Those who know more bout the company either work inside the Foundation or have had other contact with them. Director Harding seems quite content to keep it that way, despite having put significant amounts of funding into their active locations.

Currently their base of operations is on Alhena, while they maintain two other facilities on Dickinson and Gallatin which serve as backup data centers.

Public Agenda

Most of what the Foundation does publicly is aimed at acquiring information and samples of technology for "the archive". During fundraising periods, some of the successful acquisitions have been shown off to demonstrate there is a value to the Foundation's work. The more advanced a technology is, the more interested the Foundation is in adding it to their data archives. The first batch of acquisitions were meant to make it less expensive to acquire functional prosthetic limbs, and to treat several different common genetic disorders. In the tenures of most recent Directors, more specifically preceding and following a significant loss of data at one of the backup sites, the agenda has changed somewhat. More funding has been directed to acquire more robust data archives and expertise to service them without needing outside help.

The most recent mission statement and public releases put out by Director Harding have been clear in stating the Foundation intends to return to their roots in acquiring information. Two areas of noted interest are the means of safely handling premature births, and acquiring information on artificial organs from the Star League era. There was also an announcement of a potential partnership with the Free Worlds Technical Institute to begin instructing medical professionals on some of the saved knowledge within the Foundation's archives. The negotiations were set to begin in 3034, however they are supposedly on hold pending the outcome of ongoing litigation.

History

Founded by Kieran Bell in 2926, the Atlantis Medical Foundation was intended to start archiving medical techological information. During the Succession Wars, many automated factories and data centers were destroyed, irregardless of what they were actually making. This made more advanced technology difficult to continue producing, including a broad variety of medical equipment. With myomer replacement limbs becoming incredibly expensive, and other medical treatments becoming lost, Kieran Bell began asking for partners in a venture to keep the information alive. Most manufacturers refused to share proprietary information at the time, fearing it was a trick by one of the Great Houses to accumulate leverage over their enemies. However, after five years of face-to-face negotiations and plenty of handshake deals the Foundation was formed.

Over the last hundred years, there have been fifteen different Directors who took charge after Kieran's death in 2935. Most of these faced significant trouble during their tenure, as efforts to gather information ran into repeated roadblocks and cost the Foundation substantial amounts of money. Most of this expense was spent on putting two backup data centers into operation, as the computer systems would continually experience failures which required expensive replacement parts. Twice there were upgrades planned which would not work with the data infrastructure, and in 3025 there was an attack by a computer virus which caused the Gallatin facility to be shut down for three years to ensure no attack could spread to the other facilities.

This was only compounded as attempts to acquire information often ran into roadblocks. In most cases, it became necessary to hire mercenaries (often without the use of BattleMechs) to do the task rather than be discreet. An attempt to secure information and assets from Rysel Medical Laboratories resulted in a complete loss of the mercenary force in question, prompting the resignation of the Director who ordered it. This was how Angelo Harding became the current Director, and his initial year was spent dealing with legal entanglements between Sorvetz Reisel and the Foundation. After settling those, it became necessary to look into other interests across the Lyran Commonwealth. The current project is to resume acquiring knowledge and samples of medical technology, while investigating current issues with the data center on Dickson.
