The Red Shield Report in White Reach | World Anvil

The Red Shield

General Summary

Mission Profile

  • Mission Type: Base Defense
  • Force Size: 6000 BV
  • Track Cost: 400 WP

Situation Overview

While the Harbingers finish recovering from their combat action, their perimeter defenses pick up six approaching BattleMechs. Hurrying to rearm the weapons on the Atlas and Hatchetman, they arrange an ambush of sorts to defend their presence with the Awesome supporting them.

Objectives

Primary Goal: Destroy or force to withdraw at least half the enemy force. Doing so will result in salvage rights being permitted for anything which is left on the field after the enemy finishes withdrawing. (Reward: 300 WP)
Secondary Goal: Among these attackers is a command unit, helping to coordinate the attack. Destroy them for a bonus. (Reward: 200 WP)

Setup

The defender will setup terrain for their base, consisting of two supply containers and seven random buildings. The attacker then will chose which edge to enter from, and the defender chooses to place their units, all of them must be within one hex of a building.

Battle Report

Prelude

"Deadeye, Badboi. You're with me. I'm tired of dealing with being beaten, so let's do the beating. Lay in wait here, and when they approach the city we take out as many as we can and push them out." Commander Dupree cracked his knuckles before returning his hands to the controls of his Atlas. "If you have shots, take them. I don't know who they are, I don't care. Try not to completely destroy them, though, we need someone alive to ask for questions."

Turn 1

This turn began mostly with the Wasps and Crusader moving on one flank for the relative safety of a liquid storage tank, while the Shadow Hawk and Dervish attempted to use the buildings as cover while advancing. The Warhammer approached cautiously, being the commander and having significant long-range potential. However, luck favors the bold again as the Awesome's PPCs fired past one of the Wasps, and the Hatchetman's Autocannon destroyed that Wasp's arm with its primary weapon. A long-range shot from the Warhammer managed to tag the Atlas for no appreciable damage.

Turn 2

The Hatchetman's weapons eviscerated the fully functional Wasp, as well as armless Wasp attempting to drop on top of it in a desperate Death From Above strike. The Awesome and Atlas exchanged fire with the Dervish and take damage with another successful PPC hit from the Warhammer. The pilot of the Atlas then failed to stay upright after another hit, but was soon preparing to stand up and go after the Dervish. The Shadow Hawk's weapons fire landed, but just shaved armor off the Awesome. The Crusader fired off one of its arm-mounted missile launchers, wanting to try suppressing the Hatchetman and blasting away chunks of armor.

Turn 3

Following the devastating blows earlier, the aggressors decided to pull back. The Crusader and Shadow Hawk tried to get away with the least amount of damage, laying down covering fire while the Warhammer moved up to try to cover the Dervish's retreat. The Hatchetman made itself busy putting down the other Wasp, while the Awesome couldn't manage to hit the Dervish. The Atlas likewise could not find a decent firing solution on the Shadow Hawk, and so it aimed at the Warhammer stepping up to cover the retreat.

What followed was perhaps a repaying of an old favor as an AC/20 slug tore through the Warhammer's head and obliterated it. The surviving three aggressors hurried off, managing to pull out and allowing the defenders time to repair and pull salvage off the field.

Aftermath

The Harbingers quickly dispatched the incursion, and arranged for some newly-acquired Mongoose MON-67 Light BattleMechs to accompany another Hatchetman HCT-3F and chase down the enemy and cut off as much of the retreat as they can.
