Royal Wings Species in When the Curtain has fallen | World Anvil

Royal Wings

The Royal Wings are eagle spirits changed by the concepts of monarchy, rule, and authority. They used to mostly show up in countries where those animals were either present on flags and national emblems or were already associated with those concepts. Similarly, countries that perceived other animals in that way have their own counterparts of Royal Wings.

Wings draped in red and purple - appearance

Royal Wings take the form of giant, eagle-like creatures. They can measure between 2 and 7 meters tall when standing on their two clawed legs, and their bodies can reach 12 meters from the tip of their beaks to the end of their tails. They can resemble various species of eagles with the feathers on their torsos and heads mostly coming in white, black, golden, or brown. The thing that distinguishes them from the normal eagle spirits the most is their wings. The feathers on them almost always take on the colors of royal capes and mantles - white with black spots on their shoulders, resembling the fur made out of ermine tails, red, blue, or purple on most of their length, and white again on the ends. Thanks to the disproportionate length of the wings of those spirits, whenever they walk on their legs, they drag their wings on the floor behind them, making the illusion of a royal cape almost perfect. Once in a while, the specimen has its royal appearance completed with feathers or combs on their heads that resemble crowns.
In places where the memory of one ruler is stronger than any others before or after them, Royal Wings might show up with markings on their heads that make them resemble the face of said ruler.

Places of the rule - distribution

Even before the Extinction Royal Wings the decreasing number of monarchies in the world meant that the number of Royal Wings started to drop drastically. While in the past they could often be found not only in the castles and town halls but also at sites of many battles. Wherever the ruler showed up, there was at least one of them in the immaterial counterpart of the world following them.
Lately, they can only be found in the ruins, hanging on to the memories of the greatness and power they influenced and fed on. And since Lords would never share their glory with lowly spirits, it seems that most of them will either die out or become something else, like spirits of the past and ruins.

A leader or a tyrant - personality

Royal Wings are extremely proud creatures. It is really easy to become the target of their wrath should one disrespect them in some way. Depending on the country they reside in and the rulers they were attached to in the past, they might be wise sages, sharing their knowledge with those seeking it, genius strategists, or they might show the darker traits, ordering everyone just for their fun or trying to kill anyone who just looks at them wrong.

Taboo:
Royal Wings see themselves as rulers. One of their most common taboos is to destroy the symbols of power in the area. This might be as simple as getting rid of a crown or a relic or as hard as wrecking a castle or overthrowing the rulers in the area. For the ones that look like certain rulers of the past, one might get rid of the spirit by killing them in a way the ruler died. Though there is no guarantee that a new spirit won't take its place soon after.   Reproduction:
As spirits, Royal Wings don't reproduce.   Social structure:
Royal Wings are extremely territorial, hunting down any other members of their species that might show up in their area. However, thanks to the places where they are formed, they are often surrounded by other spirits related to monarchy and authority. If a Royal Wing is the strongest spirit in the area, they will form a court with other, weaker spirits. However, if there is a stronger spirit related to rule on their territory, they will try to become stronger than them and either consume or destroy them.
